What is VCB ?
VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) interface from VMware Official backup interface to backup VMware machines online Enables backup vendors like TSM to perform VMware backups Not a Backup product by itself ! Enables centralized off-loaded backups on a dedicated backup proxy server

Allows for consolidated backups of multiple VMware machines

Supports SAN environments Part of VMware Infrastructure Enterprise Edition and can be purchased as add-on product to VMware Starter and Standard Editions

How does VCB work?

VCB quiesces all virtual machines on ESX Servers and opens their files up to access by a backup proxy server. It does it by creating VMware snapshots. This allows TSM to either backup the data as full VMware machines images or as individual files.

While the VMware machines are in this state all of the following changes are written to a delta file. After the backups have finished the delta file will be applied and VCB deletes the former snapshot.

Why VCB ?
Traditional methods of backing up VMware have disadvantages:
No officially supported VMware Backup interface before VCB Backup load on ESX Server impacts ESX Server significantly since it is cumulative

5% CPU load is OK until you have 20 virtual machines backing up at once Intense Disk I/O coupled with intense Network I/O

Backup load is very difficult to virtualize

Backing up disk images over the VMware Service Console is slow

Consistency issues with online backups of .vmdk files

Manual scripting required for SAN, proxy-based, consolidated, backups Availability impact on large VMware environments

-> VCB helps to cope with large VMware production environments

VCB File-level Backup

VCB takes snapshots of virtual machine drives
VCB mounts the virtual machine snapshot over the SAN to a directory on the backup proxy Works for files inside the virtual machine on individual file/directory level Can use incremental forever file backups and individual files can be restored No physical data movement to the backup proxy Currently only supported for Windows virtual machine OSs Protects against data loss inside the virtual machine Backup is off-loaded from ESX Server Parallel backup into TSM

TSM Windows B/A Client installed backup proxy VMware currently supports Windows 2003 (32 and 64 bit) as backup proxy OS
Each VMs data is automatically stored under their specific TSM Nodename

No specific VCB File-Level restore, 2 options for recovery:

1. 2.
9

Option: Install TSM B/A Client inside virtual machine and restore files from there Option: Restore data to backup proxy and move it to original location

VCB Full-VM Backup

VCB provides set of files which represent full images of virtual machines Image level virtual machine backups are OS neutral Windows, Linux, all other virtual machine OSs (guests) are supported VCB exports the virtual machine snapshot to a directory on backup proxy Physical data copy takes place to make it available on backup proxy Includes virtual machine disk images ( .vmdk files) and configuration files Protects against data loss of the complete virtual machine (Disaster Recovery) Backup is off-loaded from ESX Server Parallel backup into TSM Works only full (not incremental), but TSM Subfile level backup can be leveraged TSM Windows B/A Client is installed on backup proxy
VMware currently supports only Windows 2003 as backup proxy OS All data are stored under the proxy server TSM Nodename

VCB Full-VM restore:

11

Last backup might still be on local disk and can be restored Data (.vmdk files) can be restored from TSM Server into the SAN Optional: VMConverter utility extracts individual files from .vmdk files

New in TSM 6.1

Full VM backup/restore integrated in TSM
Command Line: TSM Full VM backup GUI: Action -> Restore

VMware Backup/Restore integrated in TSM Client GUI Exports are broken into 2 GB file chunks
TSM Client backs up chunks at a file level Size is tunable (2 GB is default for subfile level backup)

Enhanced password management ESX Server 3.i has no service console

TSM Linux client based backups are no option anymore

File Level recovery

From a VCB File-Level backup:
Restore individual files from within the guests

From a VCB Full-VM backup:

Restore the complete VM and use VMware Extract Utility for individual files. TSM Command Line/GUI integration of the VMware Extract utility planned for the future

Applications and Databases inside VMware

How are Applications and Databases running inside virtual machines being backed up?

Even with VCB, applications and databases are not consistently being backed up since transactions could be in transit (from memory) and not consistently written to VMFS when the snapshot takes place !

2 Options:
1. Option: Quiesce database/application via VCB pre-scheduling before snapshot (requires manual scripting, not recommended) 2. Option: Use TSM for products (TDPs) in addition to VCB from within virtual machines (recommended). Needs to be licensed in addition.

TSMs VMware Support History

TSM 5.3 and up (Traditional VMware backups without VCB)
Run a TSM B/A Client from within the individual machines itself Run TSM B/A Client on Linux on the ESX Server and backup flat VMware files

TSM 5.4
Basic integration using the VCB integration module (TSMIM) Recovery view of the data is centered around the VCB host Manual Scripting involved

TSM 5.5
Integrated VCB product-based solution requiring no manual scripting for file-level backup Does not require integration module from VMware Better recovery and transparent management of the data on the TSM Server
User is removed from the fact that the backup was performed from a VCB backup host Manage a virtual machine's backup data as if it had been backed-up by a TSM client running inside the virtual machine

TSM 6.1
TSM GUI integration TSM Command Line integration for Full-VM backups
