Mobile GIS

Mobile GIS refers to an integrated software/hardware framework for the access of geospatial data and services through mobile devices via wireline or wireless networks (Tsou, 2004).

(Notebooks, PDA, Tablet PC, Pocket PC, etc.)

WHY mobile GIS

Field works: data collection and validation process, coupled with GPS and wireless communications. Real-time update / change GPS integration.
Department of Geodetic Engineering, Gadjah Mada University

How GPS and mobile information systems have enhanced GIS

Ability to define data to be collected prior to field work Data dictionaries Ability to quickly and accurately collect information Location and attribute information Various levels of positional accuracy Error checking on attribute entry Compatibility with GIS and CAD systems

Department of Geodetic Engineering, Gadjah Mada University

Ways GPS can be used in GIS

Data collection

Recording something, somewhere

What do I have? What condition is it in?

Data maintenance

Verifying something, somewhere

Is the information I have correct?

Data use

Current and accurate data to support decision making Finding the asset to perform maintenance/repair

GPS/GIS Applications in Planning

Urban & Regional Planning

Data collection/maintenance (rural addresses, fire hydrant, signpost inventories) Cadastral/Land Parcel Delineation
Emergency response (wildfire, hurricane) Pre-event risk assessment Data collection/maintenance

Emergency Planning & Response

Forestry

Tree inventory, logging roads, watershed

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

Wi-Fi or WiMAX Technology

Different from cellular phone communication (CDMA, GPRS) Fast Transmission Speed, Good for GIS applications (large size of data/images) Wi-Fi -- MIMO (multiple input multiple output). Short distance: 300 feet. WiMAX (available in late 2006) (Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN). 30 75 Mbps, 4 6 miles
