Definition
Entrepreneurial Development Program means a program developed to help a person in strengthing his entrepreneurial motive and in acquiring skills and capabilities necessary for playing his entrepreneurial role effectively. It is very necessary to promote his: understanding to motives, Motivation pattern, their impact on behavior and entrepreneurial values A program which seeks to do this can qualify to be called as EDP.

Focus of EDP
EDPs should help develop latent facilities of those who possess the potential of becoming entrepreneurs. Understanding the type of input that are required by a group of entrepreneurs should be understood clearly and training program should be altered accordingly. Training be not only to set up an industrial venture but also to enable the trainees to run it successfully. The focus should be on the persons rather than on the project. These programs should be conducted in place where necessary infrastructure for training is available. One of the objective of training should be on changing the attitude and mindset of young people from security oriented activities to risk taking activities.

The process of entrepreneurial development consists of creating an entrepreneurial person by:

Imbibing entrepreneurial quality and motivation

Developing capacity of sensing, selecting, planning and establishing an enterprise.


Acquiring ability to successfully manage the established enterprise

EDP consists of three broad phases:

Initial or pre-training phase

Training or development phase

Post training or follow up phase

1. Pre-Training phase: includes following activities and preparations required to launch training program:
Creation for infrastructure for training Preparation of training syllabus Tie up of guest faculty Arrangement for inauguration of the program Designing tools and techniques for selecting the trainees Formation of selection committee Publicly campaign for the program Development of application form Pre-potential survey of environmental opportunities

2. Training or development Phase:

The training program is implemented to develop motivation and skills among the participants. The objective of this phase is to bring desirable changes in the behaviors of trainees. The trainers have to judge how much and how far the trainees have moved in their entrepreneurial pursuits.

Is he attitudinally tuned very strongly towards his proposed project ideas? Is he motivated to plunge for entrepreneurial venture and risk that is expected of an entrepreneur? Is there any change in his entrepreneurial outlook, role and skill? How should he behave like an entrepreneur? What kind of entrepreneurial behavior does the trainee lack? Does he possess the knowledge of technology, resources and other related entrepreneurial knowledge?

3. Post training or follow up case:
Involves assessment to judge how far the objectives of the programs have been achieved.

Reveals drawbacks in the earlier phases.


Suggest guidelines for framing the future policy. Review of infrastructural support, counseling and assistance in

establishing new enterprise and development of existing units.

Common activities:
Preparing and maintaining a separate file for each trainee. A history card indicating the bio-data for each entrepreneur and the work done by him. Keeping in touch with every entrepreneur through letters. Passing the desired information to the entrepreneur well in time. Visiting every entrepreneur periodically. Follow up meeting and a follow up register to ensure the success of the EDP.
