Mass Balance in Human Kidney

KIDNEY: GROSS ANATOMY

Renal artery Supplies blood

Renal artery

Inside it splits into many fine capillaries Each capillary supplies blood to nephrons
Renal vein Ureter

Lets have a look at a nephron!!!

Assumptions
Cell membrane
Blood capillaries thirsty

FILTRATION
Glomerulus brings a large surface area Liquid filtered from blood under pressure (filtration) Water Glucose Salts Urea Vitamins

Glomerulus

( Waste + Useful )

RE-ABSORPTION & SECRETION

Most of the reabsorption of important molecules occurs here. Includes: Glucose Vitamins Amino acids Chlorides Bicarbonates

Proximal Convoluted Tubule

RE-ABSORPTION & SECRETION

Salt leaves ascending arm through active transport. Water leaves descending arm through osmosis. Loop of henle helps to produce concentrated urine.

Vasa Recta

Vasa recta capillaries act as counter-current exchangers. It helps to produce and maintain salt gradient.

RE-ABSORPTION & SECRETION

Fine adjustments in urine Distal Convoluted Tubule composition are being made here. Secretion occurs, includes: Ammonia H+ and K+ ions Uric acid Penicillin Vasa Recta
