Calibration Issues of OSA-180/500/501

Optical Spectrum Analyzers (OSA) provide information of

the optical power over the wavelength.

All JDSU OSA-180/500/501/320 provide internal

wavelength and relative optical power calibration.

No recalibration of wavelength and relative optical power is required.

NOTE: As absolute optical power measurements mainly depend on the health of the optical interface an inspection of the optical front connector is recommended every two years.

Power Calibration
The JDSU OSA modules OSA-180/500/501/320 are based on an internal calibrated optical power meter. The wavelength dependence and the linearity of the optical power meter are calibrated in the factory. Calibration data is stored individually for each instrument in internal memory. For measurement of relative power (OSNR, channel power difference ...) no recalibration is required.
NOTE: A recalibration period of two years is recommended for absolute power measurements The abs. optical power accuracy mainly depends on the condition (insertion loss) of the optical front connector. From experiences with physical contact optical connectors Acterna recommends a regular check of the front connector.

28

2007 JDSU. All rights reserved.

JDSU CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY INFORMATION

How to Check the abs. Power Accuracy

Use a stable narrow-band optical source in the wavelength range 1530-1560nm (e.g. DFB-Laser) DFB
source

1. Make a reference measurement of optical power with a DFB-laser and a calibrated power meter (e.g. OLP-55) 2. Connect DFB-source to OSA and perform a measurement. Initiate a recalibration if OSA peak level differs more than specified abs. power accuracy.

NOTE: even with bad optical front connectors accurate measurements of relative power (e.g. OSNR and power difference) can be made

OSNR as Signal Quality Parameter

In an amplified system, one limiting factor is the distance of the signal to the optical noise, called Optical-Signal-to-Noise-Ratio OSNR This is a signal quality parameter, not a parameter of any transmission components or test equipment.

Definition of OSNR

The signal quality parameter OSNR must be independent of the receiver or the test equipment. Therefore the OSNR is de facto standardized to 0,1nm noise bandwidth:
total average power of the optical signal OSNR =

power of the noise measured in 0,1nm-BW

JDSU CONFIDENTIAL & PROPRIETARY INFORMATION

Noise Power Measurement with JDSU OSAs

Each JDSU-OSA is calibrated during manufacturing in the factory The optical filter bandwidth (Bo) is calibrated and stored individually for each instrument By knowing the optical filter BW (Bo) it is possible to calculate the noise power at 0.1nm noise bandwidth

Noise bandwidth can be set in instrument parameter setup menu

Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexers (ROADM) have built-in filters for demultiplexing the input signal. Optical switches will then provide the add and drop functionality. A multiplexer is used to combine all channels into one fiber.

New Optical Polarization Splitting Method

Assumption: - ASE noise consists of non polarized light. - Signal consists of arbitrarily polarized light. Use polarization nulling technique

Solution:

Signal suppression with polarization filter to measure the noise at signal wavelength => in-band noise

The OPS method: Optical Polarization Splitting method (JDSU Pat pending)
Separation of polarized light from non polarized noise by using
Variable polarization controller Polarization beam splitter + filter

Off-center, narrowband optical filtering

Polarized Signal Suppression

Background Use polarization filter to suppress polarized light Polarization filter must be aligned in 90 to the incident polarization Suppression of the polarized light depends on the alignment between polarizations of input signal and polarization filter Suppression can be up to 25-30dB Without alignment an average suppression of ~5dB will be achieved Without polarization controller it is not possible to achieve accurate and repeatable OSNR-results in ROADM networks !

Challenge: Cascaded ROADMs and Effective Bandwidth

1 Flat-top Filter

Different technologies of ROADMs have different filter shapes: Flat-top and Gaussian filter shapes Cascading ROADMs will create rounded = Gaussian filter shapes Cascading ROADMs will reduce effective filter bandwidth After only 6 cascaded filters the effective filter-BW will be reduced by ~40%

1 Gaussian Filter

20 Flat-top filters

20 Gaussian Filters

In ROADM networks both, the effective bandwidth and the filter shape are unknown, this leads to an unknown noise distribution inside the channel pass band.

=> In-Band OSNR measurements need to be able to cope with any effective ROADM filter shape

Technical Background: Pol. Nulling with Overlapping Spectra

OSA-500R

Challenge: XT due to Overlapping Spectra

Transmission of high data rates in DWDM networks with tight channel spacing Effective signal bandwidth can be larger than channel bandwidth Overlapping signal spectra will create crosstalk (XT) This may happen e.g. at 40Gbps transmitted over 50GHz channel spacing

Crosstalk (XT) due to overlapping spectra

88

Overlapping spectra: 3 channels 40Gbps with 50GHz channel spacing Crosstalk (XT) due to overlapping spectra Not possible to measure OSNR with conventional out-of-band OSNR method => Need for In-Band OSNR measurement

JDSUs solution: Full Polarization Nulling

Measure I-OSNR trace: = trace based on accumulation of max suppressed signal of all measurements (up to 1000 different pol. measurements ) Crosstalk (XT) leads to higher noise values at the border of channel pass band But:
I-OSNR trace

True InBand OSNR

No XT in center of channel pass band => high suppression = accurate in-band noise floor

OSA-trace

Higher I-OSNR trace due to XT

Measurements are taken over entire pass band for each channel I-OSNR trace is based on real measurements

In-Band noise is approximated to I-OSNR trace in center of channel pass band

=> JDSUs Full Polarization Nulling provides the True OSNR result in DWDM networks with overlapping spectra !

Summary
Regular OSA could overestimate OSNR results by up to 10dB. Inaccurate OSNR measurements can not be used to show the margin for further system channel upgrades Even high OSNR measurements will result in service failure after system upgrade JDSUs OPS-method is the ONLY field method that provides accurate and reliable measurements of the true OSNR in all ROADM deployment scenarios. With the true OSNR it is possible to indicate system margin to predict service quality after system upgrade and to avoid system outage.
