Electro-Kinetic Road Ramp

Drive over the 'Electro-Kinetic Road Ramp' and generate speed bump electricity!

What is the project about?

When vehicles pass onto a flexible ramp, the weight that the vehicle exerts on it will trigger a special designed mechanism, which is connected to an electricity generator. The weight will then be passed along to set of cog in motion through a transmission system with cam and gears, and finally rotates the rotor of the generator to create electricity. The energy will either be stored in a battery or available for immediate consumption.

Electro-Kinetic Road Ramp

Goal of this Project

Not only replays the role of regular speed breaker but also generates electricity. The weight of moving vehicles can be utilized. The device is designed to have minimum discomfort on the drivers and passengers. The electricity generated can be used for street and traffic lighting.

Scope of this Project

Powering street and traffic lights. Sufficient to support regular energy consumption of LED traffic lights. Serves the function of a speed breaker. Gridding multiple units ensures continuos operation. Storage of energy makes to power the street light in night.

Compared to solar energy

Not depends on climate changes Solar panels require large area for installation to acheive a good level of efficiency.

Compared to wind power

Cheaper Takes up less space

RATCHET WHEEL MACHANISM

Device that allows continuous linear or rotary motion in only one direction while preventing motion in the opposite direction Simple construction

Fly wheel
Rotating mechanical device that is used to store rotational energy. Has significant moment of inertia. The amount of energy stored in a flywheel is proportional to the square of its rotational speed. Provide continuous energy when the energy source is not continuous = 2 2 = 2 2

Maruthi Alternator

An alternator is an electromechanical device that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy in the form of alternating current Initially it draws current from the battery When rotation reaches rated it generate 12 v ac

It consists of a bridge rectifier and

voltage regulator Charging of battery starts Regulator is used for making the output voltage constant by controlling the field current

The brushes in an alternator carry only excitation current Three-phase winding is used to provide direct current with low ripple The field windings are initially supplied power from the battery

Bridge rectifier
Consists of 6 diodes Converts 3 phase ac to dc It is polarity sensitive

Battery
12V, 9Ah Maintenance free Good for rapid charging and discharging

ADVANTAGES
This is a cheaper means of power generation. Space requirement is very less. This system does not depend on any climatic changes like rain for hydel power generation As this system does not use any fuel this is a non polluting system. User friendly system.

After doing this project we found that :

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Placing bearings: reduce friction Stronger shaft: allows handle more weight Use of gears: makes rotation more efficient Proper generator: makes enough voltage at rated rpm Wobbling: harder metal should be used No need of 40Ah generator: connected load will be less

The above mentioned things improves the overall efficiency of the machine.

Conclusion
This road ramp system is a desirable choice for power harvesting. This device can be installed in traffic zones where vehicles are required to reduce speed. The system can transfer the kinetic energy of the car which originally would have been wasted, to electric energy. But we found some problems after doing and testing this device. If we rectify that too, this project will become a great success.
