A dairy is a commercial establishment for processing or selling milk and milk products.

Schematic flow sheet of the main dairy products.

BOD in wastewater is contributed by cream, butter, cheese and whey products. The alkalinity in the effluent is attributed to the presence of the caustic soda, detergents etc. TSS & TDS in the effluent is contributed from different detergents used in vehicle washing, presence of fat particles and salts. The fats from production unit give rise to Oil & Grease

BOD:N:P =100:8.47:5.65, enough nutrients are present so biological treatment is feasible. pH is in Alkaline range, so neutralization is to be carried out, prior to Biological treatment. (should lie between 6.5 to8.5). Equalization tank can also be employed. For the removal of Oil and Grease Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF) units are employed which otherwise may cause operational problems. Temperature is within the range. TSS should also be removed (in Primary Clarifier) as they may cause operational problems in further processes.
