of five players on a rectangular court. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter and 10 feet (3.0 m) high mounted to a backboard at each end

HISTORY
In early December 1891, Canadian

American Dr. James Naismith, a physical education professor and instructor at the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School (YMCA) (today, Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA) Duck on a Rock reference of the incorporated rules in basketball.

Womens basketball began in 1892 at Smith

College when Senda Berenson, a Physical Education teacher, modefied Naismiths rule for women. She oraganized the first womens collegiate basketball game on March 21, 1893. The first Canadian Inter-university basketball game was played in Kingston,Ontario in December 1902, when Mc Gil University visited Queens University.

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

BALL: It may be made of leather or rubber

material for the womens division, 724 737 mm in circumference ( size 6) and 510g-567g in weight. For the mens division, 749 780 mm in circumference (size7) and 567g-650g in weight. It has either eight (8) or twelve (12) seams, not exceeding 6.35 mm in width. It must bounce not less than 1.20m and not more than 1.40 in height. NET: Is composed of white cord not less than 30 threads nor more than 120 with 15 to 18 in length. It slows the ball down so that it can be observed passing through the hoop.

RING: Shall be securely attached to the

backboard to prevent vibrations from shattering the backboard after a dunk shot, the ring are mounted on springs. PROTECTIVE PADDING: Is attached to the bottom of the backboard to protect players from injury. BACKBOARDS: Are made of wood, glass, or fiberglass. Horizontally, it has 1.80 m and 1.05 m vertically, with the lower edges 2.90 m above the floor. BASKETS: Are comprised with solid iron rings with a 0.45 m inside diameter and a net of 0.40 m in length.

BASIC SKILLS
Shooting is the act of attempting to score points

by throwing the ball through the basket, methods varying with players and situations. Rebounding: The objective of rebounding is to successfully gain possession of the basketball after a missed field goal or free throw, as it rebounds from the hoop or backboard. Passing: A pass is a method of moving the ball between players. Dribbling is the act of bouncing the ball continuously with one hand, and is a requirement for a player to take steps with the ball.

Blocking: A block is performed when, after

a shot is attempted, a defender succeeds in altering the shot by touching the ball. In almost all variants of play,

Kinds of Passing
CHEST PASS - This is the most basic pass,

used when there is no opponent between you and the receiver. It is used for quick, clean passing over short distances. BOUNCE PASS The bounce pass should travel from your waist to the receivers waist. OVERHEAD PASS It is used for passing over an opponents head and especially useful for a taller player to use when passing over a smaller opponent. BASEBALL PASS Is most often used to advance the ball up the floor. This pass is designed for distance, speed and initiating fast breaks.

TWO KINDS OF DRIBBLING

SPEED DRIBBLE The player can speed up by

pushing the ball further ahead when running into unmarked space. But remember to keep your head up. This is usually used when a player is unguarded.

PROTECTED DRIBBLE The player dribbles

against the defender.Bounce the ball close to your foot on the side away from the defender. Always keep your body between the ball and the defender.Guard the ball wisely by spreading your left arm properly. Keep your knees bent and your head up.

FIVE TYPES OF DRIBBLING STYLES

Side dribble It is a kind of dribbling where

the player dribbles on either right or left of the body. Crossover dribble Change the ball from one hand to the other by letting it bounce in front of you. Keep the bounce fast and slow. Between the leg This exercise needs plenty of practice. It gives good protection to the ball. The player passes the ball from right to left hand. The ball passes between the legs as it bounces. Behind the back It is a very useful technique, but need a lot of practice to master it.The ball passes behind your back bouncing towards the other hand.

Turn around dribble For this slightly

easier method , you actually turn right around as you change hands. You have to be very quick and alert as you will momentarily be facing away from the basket. To execute the turn around dribble, the player changes from a right handed to left handed dribble. The left foot is placed ahead and he pivots backwards on it a full 360 degree, bouncing the ball with his right hand. His left hand comes around to collect the ball.

TYPES OF SHOOTING
Free throw is the privilege given to a player

to serve one to two points by unhindered throw for a goal from within the free throw circle and behind the free throw line. Set shot This shot used when you are standing and close to the basket. With the ball in front of you , see yourself as springing up towards the basket. Aim the ball to loop quite high and concentrate on having a smooth continuous action. Start the shot by straightening your legs and transferring your weight slightly forward. Pump your arms upwards so they starighten and aim to lift yourself up onto your toes

Jump shot Is the most common shot at

higher level of play. Once you have mastered the set shot technique, you can progress to use a jump shot which gives better protection from blocking. The technique is the same, but this time you release the ball at the top of a vertical jump. When shooting, you can make yourself taller by jumping high: You should jump high when you are fairly close to the basket. Falling of fade away shot will result in a great loss of power unless you have mastered the basic jump shot. Usually, only gifted athletes are able to become proficient at this shot.

Lay-up Is simply a short range shot that

usually gently hits the back board. Most of the time lay-ups are performed while running towards the basket. This is one of the most often used shots.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Follow Through It is a complete extension of the

arm. Fast break Also called the run and shoot offense, it begin with a defensive rebound by a player who immediately sends an outlet pass toward his waiting teammates Outlet pass a quick pass by a defending player gaining possession after a rebound. Cross over when a ball handler dribbles the ball across his body from one hand to the other. Live a ball is live when it is released by a shooter or thrower or legally tapped by a jumper during a jump ball; the game clock starts only when the ball becomes live.

Back spin is mostly calibration for the

shooter to produce the same shot. Fade away is a jump shot while jumping backwards away from the basket. Seams are lines in the outer surface of the ball. Pivot takes place when a player who is holding a ball steps once or more than once in any direction with the same floor, while the other foot, called the pivot, is being kept at its point of contact with the floor.

Stationary the player is in a static

position while executing a ball handling drill. Steal an act of gaining possesion of the ball from an opponent. Triple threat is a position when a player facing a defender receives a pass but has not dribbled yet. From this, the player can choose from three options: to shoot, to dribble or to pass it to a team mate.
