English Towards Excellence in UPSR is a handbook designed and developed for and by Year 6 English Language teachers in primary schools in Sabah. The need for change and updating of teaching approaches is called for when the Primary English Syllabus was revised in the year 2002 and new items were added to the syllabus.
This handbook consists of systematic strategies to assist English Language teachers in the state of Sabah to teach and help pupils of Year 6 to pass the English Language paper in the UPSR examination. The department hopes that individual teachers will use English Towards Excellence in UPSR as a source for teaching and learning materials. This handbook is also excellent for the English Language Panel to use as a training tool in the professional development programmes in schools. It is hoped that through this English Bulls Eye Programme - Towards Excellence in UPSR , the following objectives in the teaching of English Language in Year 6 can be achieved :The teaching and learning of the English Language can be effective and enjoyable, English Language teachers can be motivated to perform quality classroom teaching through suggested teaching techniques, The standard of English teaching can be enhanced through the usage of this handbook. . The students performance in the UPSR examination will be improved. I wish all English teachers the very best in their effort and passion to enhance the teaching and learning and to upgrade the performance of English UPSR in Sabah.
Dr Hj Muhiddin Yusin The Director, Sabah State Education Department. July 2010
ADDRESS BY THE HEAD OF ACADEMIC MANAGEMENT SECTOR HAJAH NURI BINTI UDIN First of all, I would like to congratulate The English Unit for being able to produce the English Bulls Eye Programme - Towards Excellence in UPSR . I believe a lot of effort has been put into producing this handbook. The Year 2009 was a very challenging year for all educators in Sabah especially for those teaching the English Language. Therefore, it is high time that a useful handbook such as the English Bulls Eye Programme Towards Excellence in UPSR be produced to give a helping hand to the English Language teachers in preparing their students for the UPSR examination. This handbook was realized due to the full commitment of 8 resource teachers and the English Language officers in the Academic Management Sector, Sabah State Education Department. Finally, their undivided attention and dedication towards this project has started to bear its fruits.
It would be a great help for English teachers to use this handbook up to its potential. This hand book is practical not only for novice teachers but also for teachers who have been in the field for many years. Teachers will have a clear path to assist students to achieve better results in their UPSR.
I hope all English Language teachers, especially those teaching the upper primary classes, will find this handbook useful as their reference material. The English Language panels at the schools can also utilise this handbook for their staff development programme.
I wish everyone the best in their endeavour and let us work hand in hand to upgrade the level of English for the sake of our beloved children and for the love of our country.
