Academic Achievement In Children

By: Imperial Picasso

Welcome Parents!
The goals of the workshop is: To help parents understand the meaning of academic achievement. To understand your expectations from your child. To share information about how parents can support their childs learning.

Academic Success begins at Home.

Small adjustments in the way PARENTS act and think go a long way in determining the future trajectory of the child. A well rounded child is a consequence not the goal - of carefully planned parenting. And almost all of it is DIY

HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED

Some questions to discuss; How have families changed? How has education changed?

What about community change?

What do you know about the role of parents in the educational process

A world of disconnects
Disconnections at the Family level Little mealtime and playtime together Techno-interference( Internet, ipads, etc)

Disconnects at the School level

Student engagement Class size, Accountability standards

Disconnects at the Community level

Community involvement, mentors, role models

So how do we go about achieving all this some thoughts

Time and Space Discipline

There should be a fixed time for a child to learn. Example on the weekdays after school(3:30), one hour of TV or activity the child likes to do and then around 4:30 the child should automatically have this in his/her consciousness to drop everything and proceed to the his/her studying area. The space should be comfortable and airy. The space should not have any kind of distractions, such as toys or ipad or TV. If siblings fight try putting them in separate room. Try to motivate them with something, if you finish a certain task at this time frame you will be rewarded. Example 15 minutes of Ipad or TV.

Conscious Learning
This is a twist on the Rote Style learning. It is rote, but rote with an intent. Rote with an creative element. Example learning the numbers, you do not ask the child to simply memorize the numbers, but ask him/her to write it down in a piece of paper, color each box, simply children will remember the numbers much easier than memorizing them. Make a song or rhymes

Blackboard example.

Do not confuse physical proximity with collaborative involvement.

Spending Time is not synonmous with actual invovlment in a childs early life. You could be very involved and may not be spending much time with the childheres how A child is acutely aware of his parents approach to their world. Hence there is a lot of passive learning in a childs mind by simply looking at the parents go about their work.

Visualize then visualize some more.

Research shows a childs mind lights up with visual reference. Describing a method involves two processes for the child one to decode the verbiage and then to act. Inefficient.

A visual memory is a powerful tool with the child to compensate for the lack of living experience the child has.

Let there be free flow of the mind

There is no correct way to draw. Or to solve a puzzle. Or to Think. Let the child be. And then see the magic.

The Effort is to recognized. Not the result.

Research has time and again showed the Winners Curse is a very real phenomenon in children. The effort a child puts is what should be recognized. Not the result. Not the innate ability of the child. As parents we need to focus a lot more on the effort a child puts in rather than putting the fear of failure in the childs mind.

Imperial Picasso
We attempt to put the ideas described into activities to nurture a child at this very formative age. The structure is purposefully kept flexible to match the childs disposition Active feedback to the parent so that the process we initiate here continues at the childs home.
