Statistics and the Times

August 23, 2013 ICEHS Sta. Filomena, Iligan City

Statistics is a branch of science which deals with the development of methods for a more effective way of collecting, organizing, presenting and analyzing data. Statistics may also be the data itself or some computations derived from it.

What is Statistics?

DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
This area of Statistics incorporates graphs, tables and measures to extract and present information from the data. It does not attempt to go beyond what has been collected.

INFERENTIAL STATISTICS
This area aims to generalize or draw conclusions based on information derived from samples taken from the target population.

Major Areas of Statistics

The word statistics is said to be derived from the Latin word status or the Italian word statista, both used to mean a political state or a government. The English poet and playwright William Shakespeare used the term Statist in one of his dramas in 1602.

Hamlet
To be, or not to be: that is the question.

SOME APPLICATIONS OF STATISTICS

The best thing about being a statistician is that you get to play in everyones backyard.

John Tukey

Statistics help in the search for effective treatments for multiple sclerosis. Statistics help to systematically synthesize evidence that improves treatments for heart conditions. Kaplan-Meier Estimator improves drug trials, saving countless lives. Multicenter AIDS trials improve patient outcomes.

Biostatistics
studies biological phenomena and observations by means of statistical analysis, and includes medical statistics

Better statistical models improve the tracking of disease rates. Spatial statistics and epidemiology improve response to foot-and-mouth disease. Statistics pinpoint the cause of the fusarium keratitis epidemic. Statistics help reduce antibiotics over-consumption.

Biostatistics
studies biological phenomena and observations by means of statistical analysis, and includes medical statistics

Statistics help identify new crop varieties in breeding experiments. Identify and save endangered species. Study: Helping midlife women predict the onset of the final menses.

Biostatistics
studies biological phenomena and observations by means of statistical analysis, and includes medical statistics

Involved in complex studies that advance understanding of migration patterns. Statistics help in planning for new criminal justice system. Quick counting by panel statisticians changes electoral culture in Mexico. Census data are collected and analyzed, allowing effective national and local party decisions. Help in the planning of efficient recycling systems.

Social Statistics
the use of statistical measurement systems to study human behavior in a social environment

Transport infrastructure is improved based on statistical models people flow. Statistics help catch drug cheats at the 27th Olympic Games (in Sydney, Australia). Tailored statistics are helping people in the ongoing recovery after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. [Note:
February 2011 Christchurch earthquake was a powerful natural event that severely damaged New Zealands second-largest city, killing 185 people in one of the nations deadliest peacetime disasters.]

Social Statistics
the use of statistical measurement systems to study human behavior in a social environment

Statistics help grow the economy, and multivariate methods advance scientific understanding. Statistical thinking and methods play a pivotal role in quality improvement and resurgence of the economy. Used to forecast the adoption of a new product.

Econometrics
applies statistical methods to the empirical study of economic theories and relationships

Actuarial science applies mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk in the insurance and finance industries. Biostatistics studies biological phenomena and observations by means of statistical analysis, and includes medical statistics. Business analytics applies statistical methods to data sets (often very large) to develop new insights and understanding of business performance & opportunities Chemometrics is the science of relating measurements made on a chemical system or process to the state of the system via application of mathematical or statistical methods.

Areas of

Applied Statistics

Demography is the statistical study of all populations, a very general science that can be applied to any kind of dynamic population, that is, one that changes over time or space. Econometrics applies statistical methods to the empirical study of economic theories and relationships. Environmental statistics is the application of statistical methods to environmental science. Weather, climate, air and water quality are included, as are studies of plant and animal populations. Epidemiology is the study of factors affecting the health and illness of populations, and serves as the foundation and logic of interventions made in the interest of public health and preventive medicine.

Areas of

Applied Statistics

Geostatistics deals with the analysis of data from disciplines such as petroleum geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, meteorology, oceanography, geochemistry, geography. Operations research (or Operational Research) is an interdisciplinary branch of applied mathematics and formal science that uses methods such as mathematical modeling, statistics, and algorithms to arrive at optimal or near optimal solutions to complex problems. Population ecology deals with the dynamics of species populations and how these populations interact with the environment.

Areas of

Applied Statistics

Psychometrics is the theory and technique of educational and psychological measurement of knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and personality traits. Quality control reviews the factors involved in manufacturing and production; it can make use ofstatistical sampling of product items to aid decisions in process control or in accepting deliveries. Quantitative psychology is the science of statistically explaining and changing mental processes and behaviors in humans. Reliability Engineering is the study of the ability of a system or component to perform its required functions under stated conditions for a specified period of time

Areas of

Applied Statistics

Statistical finance, an empirical attempt to shift finance from its normative roots to a positivist framework using exemplars from statistical physics with an emphasis on emergent or collective properties of financial markets. Statistical mechanics is the application of probability theory, which includes mathematical tools for dealing with large populations, to the field of mechanics, which is concerned with the motion of particles or objects when subjected to a force.

Areas of

Applied Statistics

Statistical physics is one of the fundamental theories of physics, and uses methods of probability theory in solving physical problems. Statistical thermodynamics is the study of the microscopic behaviors of thermodynamic systems using probability theory and provides a molecular level interpretation of thermodynamic quantities such as work, heat, free energy, and entropy.

Areas of

Applied Statistics

Contemporary statistics has blossomed into a rigorous scientific discipline with applications in numerous other areas, sometimes leading to the creation of entirely new domains. These very applied disciplines, in turn, have often developed their own statistical techniques to serve their own needs. On the other hand, teaching statistical theory and practice lies at the basis of to-days education: What and how to teach statistics, within different disciplines, to obtain an optimal return?
