In Huxleys Brave New World, the drug, soma, is constantly used by the mass majority to create a permanent state of contentment. In contemporary society, drugs of any kind are used to obtain a temporary experience. We have drug abuse because that temporary experience is addictive to the point where users strive to have a permanent experience, like that of Brave New World. However, drug abuse in contemporary society does not solve issues in the manner that Brave New World does. Instead, it is a downward spiral for the users. Contemporary society strives to maintain a state of permanent contentment like Brave New World, but it only causes more struggles, and produces the opposite result where many are damaged by drug abuse, not content.
