How are black people represented in the media?

LO: To discuss media representations of black people and how they have changed with time
Starter task: Briefly discuss with your neighbour how different ethnic groups are represented in the media. Is it positive or negative? Can you give any examples?

In the past...
In the 1950s,60s and 70s black people were often not shown on TV or in film. They did not work on the News or present radio programmes. The times they were shown on TV they were often STEREOTYPED in a negative way. They were shown to be CRIMINALS or shown only to be SINGERS,DANCERS,SPORTS PEOPLE or MUSICANS

Are these pictures from the bill and Eastenders a true picture of black people?

What problems might continued representations of black people in this way mean for this group?

Are images of black people in the media improving? Are they given ordinary roles or do stereotypes still exist?

Abercrombie(1996) believes that things changed in the 1990s when black actors played normal roles in soaps such as the Cosby show. These programmes portrayed black people more successfully

Draw a timeline showing how the representation of black people has changed from the 1950s up until the 1990s.

Look at the attached reasons which side of the argument would you place them? Since the 1990s programmes such as the Bill and Eastenders have attempted to challenge negative stereotypes about black and Asian people

Black people and Hip hop culture are portrayed as violent and aggressive in the media

Black characters in reality TV shows often fit a stereotype as aggressive or stupid

Muslim women are portrayed as oppressed in the media

Programmes like Desmonds and Goodness gracious me challenged stereotypes

Many more Black and Asian people have been employed as newsreaders and actors on British TV

Young Muslim men are seen as a threat either extremists or gang members

What does a 12 mark answer look like?


There must be evidence of clear understanding shown through developed use of relevant sociological concepts and/or ideas within a well focused discussion which explicitly addresses how far.

What is meant by conformity? Other than the mass media, where else might a young person form their identity? Give one stereotypical representation of black people in the media. Give one stereotypical representation of Asians in the media. Give a more realistic representation of black people.
