BACKGROUND (WHY
SURROGACY?)

• INFERTILITY
• MEDICALLY ILL
• DON’T WANT TO GO
THROUGH PREGNANCY
DEFINITION

 THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF

SURROGATE MOTHERS:
 TRADITIONAL

SURROGATE
 AND

 GESTATIONAL
TRADITIONAL SURROGATE
MOTHER
 Involves the surrogate mother

being (AI) artificially

inseminated with the sperm
of the intended father or
sperm from a donor when the
sperm count is low. In either
case the surrogate’s own egg
will be used.
 Genetically the surrogate
GESTATIONAL SURROGATE
MOTHER
 The surrogate mother has
no genetic ties to the
offspring.
 Eggs and sperm are

extracted from the

commissioning parents
and in vitro fertilized and
PROCEDURES
1.The surrogate must
undergo many tests
2.The surrogate and the
genetic mother are
given birth control
pills to synchronize
their cycles
3.Both are injected with
Lucron (type of
steroid) to shut down
hormone production
and control the
cycles
PROCEDURES cont’
4.The genetic mother takes
fertility hormones to
stimulate egg production
5.Fertilization occurs in vitro
and incubated 2-5 days
‘till it develops into an
embryo
6.The embryo is implanted
into the uterus
Philosophy of Motherhood
• Natural mother 
carries the
child for
approximately
nine months and
gives birth to
it
• The natural mother is the
legal mother 
according to
law and
religion
Why do we OPPOSE
surrogacy???
SURROGATE MOTHER’S
P.O.V.
• Need to go through many tests and
take medications prior to surrogacy
• The surrogate is paid a large amount
of money
• The relationship between baby and
mother is commercial not
emotional
• Only becomes a vehicle for delivering
babies
• Financial exploitation  Creates a
class  poor women as
Commissioning Parents’
P.O.V.
• Must pay a large amount of money 
only rich people can
afford the costs
• Don’t want to disrupt career for child
baring  Chooses professional
careers over family
• Don‘t want to ruin or “damage” their
bodies because of pregnancy
• Is it right to “transfer” pain from one
person to another???
Controversy over child’s
position
• What if the baby becomes “retarded” or not
according to what the commissioning
parents intend??
• What would you expect??

Controversy over child’s
position
• Should the child be told about their
state of birth? What age?
• Should the identity of the surrogate
mother be routinely disclosed?
• What if the couple gets divorced
before the childbirth?
• What if the wife dies?
• What if the husband dies?

Solution

 Adopt one of many

children already in
need of a loving
family
Conclusion

• Oppose the idea of surrogate mother

 it is morally wrong
• Surrogacy is still controversial in all
aspects: through the surrogate’s
point of view, the commissioning
parents, and the position of the
child
• Solution: adopt a child
