JMP Proposed WASH Composite Goal

The Vision: Universal access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene Target by 2030: to eliminate open defecation; to achieve universal access to basic drinking water, sanitation and hygiene for households, schools and health facilities; to halve the proportion of the population without access at home to safely managed drinking water and sanitation services; and to progressively eliminate inequalities in access.

Key Challenge: Keeping the H in WASH

Hygiene absent in key reports (e.g., HLP) Advocate for hygiene within sector target: Universal access to water supply, sanitation and hygiene Evidence shows hygiene is as important as water and sanitation in reducing diarrhea1 Hygiene essential to achieve full health benefits of WASH Need for advocacy both within and outside the sector
