ENHANCED DATA RATES FOR GSM EVOLUTION
BY: PIYUSH GAHLOT 1109131063

Aim Of The Presentation

To understand what EDGE TECHNOLOGY is all about. To know its history and evolution. Understand the difference between EDGE and GPRS. transmission, modulation and coding. Its future scope.

INTRODUCTION
Enhanced data for global evolution(EDGE) is a high speed mobile data standard , intended to enable second generation global system for mobile communication (GSM) and time division multiple access(TDMA). Transmits data at up to 384 kilobits per second(Kbps) EDGE is a radio signalling technology for 3G mobile networks. EDGE is used for mobile services such as downloading of video and music clips, full multimedia messaging, high speed internet access and e-mail on the move.

HISTORY
In 1st G AMPS(Advanced Mobile phone system) developed in U.S in 1983 In 2nd G there was introduction of CDMA,TDMA and GSM. Between 2.5th and 3rd G there was an introduction EDGE TECHNOLOGY. It has been introduced into GSM network around the world since 2003 initially in north america.

GSM
GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is a standard developed by ETSI to describe protocols for second generation (2G) digital cellular networks used by mobile phones. The GSM standard was developed as a replacement for first generation (1G) analog cellular networks. This was expanded over time to include data communications, first by circuit-switched transport, then packet data transport via GPRS and EDGE. Subsequently, the 3Gpp developed third generation (3G) standards followed by fourth generation (4G). One of the key features of GSM is the Subscriber Identity Module, commonly known as a SIM card.

GPRS
Packet based networked over existing circuit switched GSM network. GPRS radio resources are used only when users are actually sending or receiving data. Rather than dedicating a radio channel to a mobile data user for a fixed period of time, the available radio resource can be concurrently shared between several users. Brings desktop experience to wireless such as web browsing and chat. Enables file transfer and home automation.

HOW EDGE IS BETTER

Increased data rates upto 384 kbps. Can handle three times more subscribers than GPRS. Three times the data capacity of GPRS. Uses 8psk and channel coding. Simple upgrades are needed for edge deployment. Works easily with every GPRS compatible phone.

Upgradation Required For EDGE

Carriers can upgrade their existing GPRS network to EDGE by performing two actions: BSC software upgrade BTS transceiver unit installation

Transmission Techniques
In addition to Gaussian minimum-shift keying(GMSK), EDGE uses higher-order PSK/8 phase shift keying (8PSK) .

EDGE produces a 3-bit word for every change in carrier phase.

Modulation And Coding Scheme

As with GPRS, EDGE has a number of coding schemes to allow for these errors
MCS1 to MCS4 (using GMSK modulation) MCS5 to MCS9 (using the 8PSK modulation) The channel encoding process in GPRS as well as EDGE consists of two steps: first, a cyclic code is used to add parity bits, followed by coding with a possibly punctured convolutional code. In all EGPRS Modulation and Coding Schemes, a convolutional code of rate 1/3 is used, and puncturing is used to achieve the desired code rate.

APPLICATIONS
EDGE provides enhanced GPRS , which can be used for any packet switched application such as internet connection. Mobile Internet access Mobile Office Field sales/service Wireless access to databases Reservation system (e.g. hotel, theater, flights) Highway charging systems Location based info service Video telephony Telescoping

CONCLUSION
EDGE is a better tech. then GPRS. Supporting same type of services as GPRS but with higher data rates of more than 400 kbps Use of GSM spectrum, bandwidth, protocol, carrier structure and cell planning process. It forms the base for 3g evolution.
