IMPACT OF DPCO POLICIES ON INDIAN PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY

The Drugs Price Control Order (DPCO), 1995 is an order issued by the Government of India under Section 3 of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 to regulate the prices of drugs.
The Order provides The list of price controlled drugs Procedures for fixation of prices of drugs, Method of implementation of prices fixed by Government and penalties for contravention of provisions .

Providing abundant quantity, at reasonable prices of essential and life saving and medicines of good quality. Strengthening the quality control system over drugs and medicines production and promoting the rational use of drugs in the country. Creating an environment friendly to channelizing new investment into the pharmaceutical industry with an objective to boost cost-effective production with economic sizes and introducing new technologies and new drugs. Strengthening the indigenous capability for production of drugs.

DPCO policy, 1995 includes following drugs


SULPHAMETHOXAZOLE PENICILLINS TETRACYCLINE RIFAMPICIN STREPTOMYCIN RANITIDINE

VITAMIN C BETAMETHASONE METRONIDAZOLE CHLOROQUINE INSULIN ERYTHROMYCIN VITAMIN A OXYTETRACYCLINE PREDNISOLONE CEPHAZOLIN METHYLDOPA ASPIRIN TRIMETHOPRIM CLOXACILLIN

The

DPCO policy, 2012 is aimed at regulating the prices of 348 drugs that are considered essential, and combination medicines using them. ( the list will be presented in final presentation)

The

policy will lower the prices of several medicines by 50% to 70%, and could reduce profitability of the industry by around 25%. There will be immediate revenue reduction of Rs.1,800 crore to Rs.2,000 crore. The industry will take at least two to three years to negate this impact
