WHATS UP WITH MINDANAO?!

The Philippines in general was a small-scale chieftain society
Barangays Bigger social organisation being formed in the area within the Philippine Islands

Two Sultanates

Sulu-prospered as a trading post

Maguindanao-sphere of influence once reached the entire Mindanao

In Philippine Historiography
Sulu and Maguindanao were often treated as one sultanate

Spaniards call them Moro

Each are connected to different outer worlds (Sulu-Brunei; Maguindanao-Ternate)

WHAT HAVE THE MUSLIM BEEN UP TO?!

Muslim merchants became active in trading
Lead to Islamic conversion, which included two steps:
Introduction of the faith and the setting up of the Muslim communities Development of the institutions, which brought substantial changes to the political and social systems

Not enough historical sources show how Islam had been accepted in Maguindanao
Sharif Hasan and the Maraja brothers

Full-scale conversion promoted by Kabungsuan

He was often successful in mediating internal conflicts

SIDE NOTE: KABUNGSUAN-WHATS UP WITH THAT DUDE?!

He forced his two cousins to convert to Islam

Married at least three women

Ushered the change in social structure Created a new ruling class

WHEN SPAIN BECAME D*CKHEADS

It was through the wars with Spain that Maguindanao began to transform into a Muslim state

Moro Wars-refer to wars fought between the Muslims in the Philippines and the Spanish military
Spain could barely maintain their strongholds
Their powers are distributed Royal vault was in debt

Spain burned many settlements, murdered or took the residents prisoner, and destroyed the mosques

MUSLIM RETALIATION

Maguindanao and Sulu allied with other ethnic peoples and attacked the Visayan region The Dutch collaborated with the Muslims Peace Treaty with Spain

Raiding the Visayan areaagain!

Kudarat declared a jihad

SO WHAT?!
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO WITH THIS INFORMATION?! WILL IT FEED ME?!

SULTAN KUDARAT: HISTORYS BADASS WARRIOR

Kudarat was the first one to use the title Sultan

The first one to call for unity using the name of Islam
Considered one of the greatest Muslim leaders Ushered in the establishment of the Maguindanao sultanate

KUDARAT THE ECONOMIST

At first their trade was, in modern terms, crap

The Dutch helped expand their trade

Kudarat never trusted the Dutch so their relationship was exclusively for trading Papa Dutch halted trade But Maguindanaos trade still went on Kudarat began to control their trade power and monopolised the wealth gain from the trade

KUDARAT THE ULTIMATE GAME OF THE GENERALS CHAMPION

NAVAL POWER! Built forts! Dug trenches!

CANNONS!
Gerontocracy (a system where leadership is reserved for elders)

KUDARAT THE ROMANTIC

Blood relationship in the Maguindanao society was regarded with utmost importance

KUDARAT THE GEOGRAPHY MAJOR

Europeans viewed the Maguindanao territory as merely a settlement led by a chieftain The Spanish invasion induced the territory to gradually expand European point of view: The expansion of Muslim power was hindered by the Spanish invasion Maguindanao point of view: uhh nope, not really
Maguindanawon casualties were fewer than the Spanish forces imagined

Rulers always ruled not the land but the people

However, they were made to realise that it was necessary to firmly control the land in order to protect their own sphere of livelihood (became apparent in Kudarats reign)

KUDARAT THE ISLAM SCHOLAR

Kudarat was well versed in Islamic law and was a renowned pandita The al-Quran (Koran) was taught along with reading and writing in schools

THE DETERIORATION OF THE SULTANATE

Four factors:
Maguindanawon did not recognise the European colonialist territorial expansion into the Asian world Lack of stability

Maguindanaos development was limited due to the importance placed on blood relationship (although it did help consolidate the unity of the sultanate
Insufficient supply of slaves
