Definition of Protean

The word protean means something or someone that easily and regularly changes its appearance.

Based on the atom described in quantum theory.

The atom has a solid nucleus composed of subatomic particles, surrounded by a cloud of orbiting electrons.

The cloud grows denser the closer one gets to the nucleus as the inner rings of electrons are more tightly bound to the core than the outer ones.
An ever-changing external cloud contains the majority of the mass.

From Todays New York Times Editorial Page THOMAS FRIEDMAN Something really big happened in the worlds wiring in the last decade, since I wrote a book called The World Is Flat. The combination of connectivity and creativity has created a global education, commercial, communication and innovation platform on which more people can start stuff, collaborate on stuff, learn stuff, make stuff (and destroy stuff) with more other people than ever before. Were entering a world that increasingly rewards individual aspiration and persistence and can measure precisely who is contributing and who is not.

Protean Organizational Structure

A protean corporation has a core of strategic employees who manage a larger cloud of resources, contracted or outsourced talent that does most of the work. Operational tasks are performed in the context of a contractual relationship as opposed to an employment relationship.

A company no longer manages employees, but tasks and contracts instead a quantum leap in management styles and process.
It's not about replacing employees with contractors, but about replacing employees with corporations. Next step after a Virtual Corporation, an adaptive organization, driven by technology with a global reach.
