The Cinema of South India is used to refer collectively to the four film industries of South India, the Kannada, the Malayalam, the Tamil and the Telugu film industries, as a single entity. They are based in Bangalore, Kerala, Chennai and Hyderabad respectively. Known for being commercially consistent, telugu cinema had its influence over commercial cinema in India. As one of the revenue generating industries, telugu film production accounts for one percent of the gross domestic product of Andhra Pradesh.

Reflection of Indian society

It is difficult to distinguish between art and life in South Asian society, they no longer imitate each other, but appear to have merged. Political philosophies, social values, group behavior, speech, dress in society is reflected in the cinema and, like a true mirror reflected back in the society.

Change in portrayal of women

Actors like Tabu , Kon Kona Sen changed the perception of women and gave issues to the society to think about.

Transition began but still women had roles of being submissive house wifes, domestic workers

Movies like Chakh De India Kahaani, No One Killed Jessica, Jodha Akhbar that gave women a tag of Female hero. Roles started buliding upon them.

Change in attitude of film makers and public

Hindi Film Industry is changing with the change in the attitude of the film makers and the audience. Thus the film makers now have started making films with shorter duration rather than three hour long films. Nagesh Kukunoor , a renowned filmmaker who is known for his offbeatfilms feels that dance sequence and songs will remain audiences favorite but their preference was changing. According to people, time nowadays is very precious and so they have started giving preference to the films with shorter duration like Bheja Fry and Khosla Ka Ghosla which were only two hours long and were huge success at the Box-Office. Also with the success of Hindi Film Industry in the overseas market, many new film makers have started making filmson themes which no one would have thought ten years ago. Films based on homosexuality like Girlfriend, Dostana, Straight and also films based on relationship of older man and ateenage girl like Nishabd were made by film makers and some of them were successful at the Box -Office which clearly shows that there was a great change in not only the attitude of the filmmakers but also the audience.

Promoting business A lesson for corporate world

There was a time when Bollywood promotions were limited to a films Muhurat or launch party, thereafter its music release event and finally a full fanfare premier. The film industry had a simple marketing formula sign in a superstar, ride on a masala recipe and success was there for the taking. If the film turned out to be a hit, it was followed up with a celebratory bash. Times have changed, now the hype and hoopla surrounding a film starts right from the storyboard or the mere thought of making a film and continues till the wee end of the screening process. And the whole thing is well orchestrated with a heady marketing mix. The prime reason for marketing usurping silent Friday releases of yore, is the smaller shelf life of films. No longer we have a Sholay or a Maine Pyar Kiya running nonstop for years and raking in moolah in slow burn. It is the very first weekend that decides the fate of a film now. Silver Jubilee, Golden Jubilee etc. have been replaced with the Rs. 100 club or the bigger Rs. 200 club. And you have to break into these clubs in quick time.
