Activity 1 INTRODUCTION TO THE FUTURE


To talk about the present or the past, we use verb forms to say what is happening now, what happened yesterday,
Vicky has friends in Toronto. I went to the zoo yesterday.

To say about the future, there is NO SINGLE FORM but MANY WAYS, depending on how we see the future event.

Activity 1 WILL
- WILL is a neutral way of expressing future but it is NOT the future tense. - In some future situations, WILL may not be the right word. After college Im going to travel around the US.

Here, to talk about an intension, we must use BE GOING TO.

Activity 1 BEING SURE and UNSURE


- We can not always be sure about the future. - To show that we are UNSURE, we can use MIGHT, COULD, We might go to Canada. It could snow soon.

BEING SURE and UNSURE To show how sure or unsure we are, we can use phrases: IM SURE, DEFINITELY, I EXPECT, I (DONT) THINK, PROBABLY Im sure itll be all right. I expect everyone will be going home.

WILL FOR THE FUTURE

- To say what we know or think about the future, we use WILL with a neutral meaning.
- WILL does not show that we have already decided to do something or we are planning something.

We also use WILL for an instant decision.

-We also use WILL to order things. Ill have the ham salad, please. -OR we use WILL in offers and invitations. Ill peel the potatoes. ~ Oh, thank you.

-

WILL: for all subjects. SHALL: for only the first person: I and WE

I will be/ shall be on holiday in August.

I SHALL is a little more formal than I WILL.

We can also use SHALL in offers and suggestions.

We DO NOT use SHALL in American English.

Activity 3 BE GOING TO Form: AM/ IS/ ARE + GOING TO + V


Vicky isnt going to have any lunch. Is Daniel going to apply for the job?

We use the BE GOING TO for something we have decided to do.

Im going to watch the next programme.

Emma is going to do an experiment this afternoon.

We can use the IM NOT GOING TO for a refusal.
Im sorry, but Im not going to walk half a mile in the rain.

We can also use BE GOING TO for a prediction based on the present situation.

In some situations, the PRESENT CONTINUOUS can have similar meaning to BE GOING TO.

Im going to visit my friend at the weekend.

-WILL does not express an intention.

-We often use BE GOING TO for an intention and WILL for

the details and comments.

WILL BE GOING TO

Used for a prediction about the future.

Also used for a prediction about the future but basing on the present situation.

If we use BOTH for predictions, BE GOING TO will be more informal and conversational than WILL.

PRESENT TENSES FOR FUTURE
1.Present Continuous for arrangements.

We use the Present Continuous for something we has arranged to do in the future.
Im meeting Harriet at six oclock.

The Present Continuous for FUTURE and be going to have similar meanings. Were having a party next week. Were going to have a party next week.

2. Present simple for a timetable We can use Present Simple for the future to talk about a public timetable e.g. train table,..

WHEN I GET THERE, BEFORE YOU LEAVE, etc.

In the sentences with 2 or more clauses, we often have linking words of time: After, as soon as, as, before, by the time, when, while, until...
As soon as you hear any news, will you let me know? I must get to the bank before it closes.

We can also use the Present Perfect for the future after the linking words of time.
Im starting a job in sales after Ive finished college.

Sometimes there is a difference in meaning between the Present Simple and the Present Perfect.
When I see the report, Ill make some notes. (Ill do both at the same time) When Ive seen the report, Ill make some notes. (Ill see it and then make some note)

We also use the Present Continuous for the future after the linking words of time, especially WHEN and WHILE.
Mark is going to listen to music while hes driving to Scotland.
