problems

Problem statement
When did it happen? During this semesters School Based Experience Who is involved? A year three student with his classroom teacher. Where did it happen? One of the school in Tronoh District

What had happened Benny (not a real name) did not pay attention in class and always disturbing his friends when studying.

How did it happen? Benny doesnt have interest in studying and always receive some complains from teachers. Puan Sharifah (not a real name) had used a lot of initiative to solve Bennys disciplinary problem but failed. She went to Bennys house and discuss with his parents about that

On the following week, Puan Sharifah observe Bennys behavior with the help of other teacher. After a few weeks, she satisfied with Bennys changes and giving Benny a watch. During recess, one of Bennys classmate approach him and praise his new watch and want to try it on.

After put it on, that person didnt want to return it back although Benny asked for it. There a struggle for the watch between Benny and his classmate that attract other students attention. During the struggle, Benny had accidentally pushed his friend to the floor.

The disciplinary teacher came after receive some report from the prefect and Benny being brought to senior assistant of students affair. Benny tell the truth to the disciplinary teacher including Puan Sharifahs gift. After listen to Puan Sharifahs explanation and the other witnesses, the disciplinary teacher believes in Benny but still punish him.

Family Background
According to Myint Swe Khine, based on the survey that has been done by The Childrens Society to 104 children in 1999/2000, found that the problematic children comes from problematic family. Every one of three children have father that encounter financial problem.

Parents weaknesses can occur in many form. In Bennys case, Through observation, there is a possibility for Benny to have lack of love from his parents. Maybe his family is not with him when he need them. Result- occur some interference that can make a student to lose their control

Peer pressure
Maybe Benny might be also influence by his friend who didnt go to school or problematic as he is. When socializing with that kind of friends, he feel that there is no fun in school except for friends who lived in his area.

School administration
According to Haliza Hamzah & Joy Nesamalar Samuel (2009), expectations of high school, his focus on the academic aspects and rules that are too strict can create climate change in class and no fun for the students to learn. Can create a limited environment where Benny didnt have a chance to expand his unique identity Cause Benny to revolt in his way to overcome his lack of power so that his revolt can be heard.

Teacher
Teacher must prepare their own lesson plan with some creative teaching aids so that the learning will be fun. Teacher may be doesnt care so much or not care at all about Benny. The teacher doesnt have assertive skills in controlling his behavior.

Students
Some students are having difficulties in receiving the input of the lesson than the others. Based on Maslows Hierarchy Of Needs, every human have physiological needs, safety needs, belongings needs, self-esteem needs and selfactualization needs.

Health
We cannot deny that may be Benny may have some health problems that can interfere his concentration. Example: Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a mental interference where the brain that control motor skills is not functioning well.

Based on research done by National Institute of Mental and Health (2006) in Classroom Management: Creating A Successful K-12 Learning Community by Paul R. Burden (2010), this disease is usually happens during childhood and give impact at almost 4% in their school age.

ASSERTIVE DISCIPLINE-LEE AND MARLENE CANTER

Canter believes that teachers have the right to establish classroom rules and insist that students follow the rules. Assertives discipline has its basic premise on the reinforcement of appropriate behaviour and students acceptance of the consequences of their actions. Classroom discipline plan allows the teacher to clarify behaviours which are expected from the students

ENFORCING ASSERTIVE DISCIPLINE

Set the rules in the first class interaction and ensure all the students understand it

For the students that follow the rules, show good and positive behaviour, reward or compliment should be given to them

For the students that break the rules, a punishment should be given to them as a lesson to them and others

ASSERTIVE DISCIPLINE IN SOLVING BENNYS PROBLEM

If Benny broke the rules for the first time a warning should be given to him For the second time, teacher can put him in detention class For the third time, more strict action can be taken for example send him to the principal or call his parents to inform them about Bennys problem

ASSERTIVE DISCIPLINE IN SOLVING BENNYS PROBLEM

Other alternative in solving Bennys problem is meeting him personally As an assertive teacher, you need to clearly state you wants and feelings to Benny. By this, the teacher can develop the understanding between the teacher and Benny Assertive style can create a positive relationship between the teacher and students

BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION MODEL- SKINNER

This approach consists of restructuring the environment so that undesired behaviors are eliminated Behavior modification use the principle of reinforcement

APPLYING BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION

Every time Benny do something good, a positive reinforce is given for example praise or privilege to get Benny to repeat the desired behavior. ( coming early to class) Negative reinforce for example when Benny is playing in the classroom for example playing with ruler, the teacher should confiscate the ruler so that Benny will exhibit the desired behavior

Logical Consequences- Dreikurs

Dreikurs (1968) believes that inappropriate behavior is motivated by need to gain attention, exercise power, exact revenge, display inadequacy. He also believe that students can be helped if the teacher understand their motives and help eliminate misbehavior are best are rectified when the students suffer the logical consequences of their behaviors.

Benny creates ruckus in order to gain attention from the teacher and peers

Problem such as disturbing his friends when studying is one of the way to gain attention

But, if Benny do something good, teacher should show attention and give him compliment of his action

Teacher should ignore Bennys action and show him he wont get attention from his action

Meet Benny after class and ask him why he did the action Say that his action (disturbing friends during lesson) cant make him get the attention Encourage Benny to do something good There are lots of good way to gain attention for example participating in class activities. Any good deeds shown by Benny must be given compliment so that he tend to repeat the good habit.

REALITY THERAPY-WILLIAM GLASSER

Reality Therapy is consistent with the views of Choice Theory in which individuals have to recognise the fact that reality exists and they must fulfil their needs their needs within its framework (Martin, Sugarman & McNamara, 2000). Choice Theory deals with individuals choice and attempts to explain why people behave in a certain way.

REALITY THERAPY-WILLIAM GLASSER

The theory is based on the concept that human behaviour is directed towards meeting four basic psychological needs that is
Love Power and control Freedom Fun

According to Glasser, when a student misbehaves, the teacher should use 5 steps of discipline:

Step 1: Teacher need to ask Benny why he behave that way. Asking questions to Benny can help the teacher to identify what is Bennys problem and what it is caused by. Step 2: Teacher also need to remind Benny that all his action can cause positive or negative consequences. For example if Benny picking fight with another students, the teacher will call his parents or send him to the headmaster.

Step 3: The teacher can help Benny to make evaluation whether his action is good or bad for him or people around him. Self reflection can help Benny to make judgment before taking any action Step 4: The teacher also can help Benny to develop a plan or ways to get rid of Bennys bad behavior.

Step 5: They must ensure that Benny try his best to follow the plan If he fails to follow the plan, he must be ready to face the consequences of his action that already been mentioned.

For example if Benny continue to disturb his friends when studying, he will not enter that class.

GROUP MANAGEMENT-KOUNIN
Based on the fact that the effectiveness of classroom discipline depends on monitoring closely on what is happening in the classroom. Teacher reprimand towards a student influenced students around the target student (Ripple Effect)

THREE MAJOR CHARACTERISTIC TO PRODUCE DESIRED RIPPLE EFFECT

CLARITY FIRMNESS ROUGHNESS

APPLYING GROUP MANAGEMENT

For example if Benny is disturbing when other student is reading in the classroom, the teacher should say Benny stop disturbing other people and pay attention to what teacher is saying. This way the student understands the desist very clearly and the others understand the displeasure of the teacher.
