THE INDUSTRIAL PROCESS IN MANUFACTURE OF SULPHURIC ACID.

Environmental Pollution by Sulphur Dioxide

Sulphur dioxide is an acidic and poisonous gas that pollutes the environment. Sulphur dioxide is produced as an intermediate product during Contact process.
Metal extraction Volcanic eruption Contact process

Sources of Sulphur Dioxide Burning of materials manufactured from sulphuric acid Burning of fossil fuels

Inhaling sulphur dioxide affects the respiratory system. It can cause lung problems such as coughing, chest pains, shortness' of breath and bronchitis. Sulphur dioxide causes air pollution, water pollution and soil pollution by making the air, water and the soil acidic. Sulphur dioxide accounts for most of the acid rain problems. a) When sulphur dioxide dissolves in water, sulphurous acid, H2So4 is formed. SO2 + H2O H2SO4 b) Sulphur dioxide can react with oxygen and water to form sulphuric acid. 2SO2 + O2 + 2H2O 2H2SO4 Acid rain occurs when the pH of rain water falls between 2.0 to 5.5. This is due to the presence of sulphurous acid, sulphuric acid and nitric acid in rain water.

The effects of acid rain on the environment are as follows : a) Pollutes the air and corrodes buildings, monuments and statues made from metals and marble. b) Increase the acidity of water in rivers and lakes. Acid rain flows into lakes and rivers. The acidic water kills aquatic organisms, disturbing the ecosystem. c) Increase the acidity of soil. It decreases the pH of the soil which becomes acidic, unsuitable for growth of plants and destroys the roots of plants. d) Leaches minerals and nutrients in the soil. The acid reacts with the minerals in the soil forming soluble salts. Essential nutrients for plants growth are depleted. e) Destroys plants and trees in the forests. Apart form the acidic soil, the trees die of combination of malnutrition and diseases.

The following ways can be used to control the effects of acid rain problems : a) Use low-sulphur fuels to reduce the emission of sulphur dioxide in exhaust gases. b) Remove sulphur dioxide from waste air by treating it with calcium carbonate before it is released. c) Neutralise the acidic soil and water by treating them with calcium oxide (lime), calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate.

STAGE LLL

3.The two reactions in stage lll are equivalent to adding sulphur trioxide to water. However, sulphur dioxide is not dissolved directly in water to produce sulphuric acid.
