EFFECTS CAFFEINE & ARTIFICIAL ENERGY HAVE ON HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY

Lauren & Sean

OBJECTIVE
See what effect artificial energy has on the human physiology and how homeostasis regulates the sudden increase in glucose from the energy drinks (Mother). Factors to look for: Increase in heart rate. Probability of the liver working faster than usual to digest the extra glucose. What effect it has on the mind response of extra energy.

MATERIALS
Grayson Two cans of mother (1000mL) Blood Pressure Equipment Thermometer Timer

PROCEDURE
Before Grayson drinks the Mothers, check his pulse, blood pressure, body temperature & weight. From the time Grayson starts drinking, we check his blood pressure, pulse and temp. every ten minutes, for 60 minutes. Ask questions about how he is feeling and describe changes in his personality. Test his pulse, temp. and blood pressure after the effects stop taking place.

RESULTS - Before Artificial Energy is Consumed

Weight: 61kg Temp: 37C Systolic (Contraction): 114 Normal range Diastolic (Release of Blood): 69 Normal range Resting Pulse: 96

Information on Mothers (per can)

Caffeine: 160mg Energy: 975kj Taurine: 2000mg Glucoronolactone: 1200mg Sugar: 52g Food Acids: 330-331 Colours: 150d 104 Preservative: 202 Gurana Extract: .005% Includes: Anacetol, Nicon, Panthothenic Acid

RESULTS - During Drinking

o1st Mother Urge to burp, feels sick, upset stomach. o2nd Mother More of an upset stomach.

RESULTS - After Drinking

oShivering/shaking

oLots of energy/moving everywhere/cant sit still/fidgety

oFeels tight in stomach area oDramatic/laughing hysterically/weird-like behaviour more than usual oLots of burping oWeighs 63kg after drinking oLooks drugged

DISCUSSION

1. What body systems undergo a change in conditions?

The primary systems observed having experienced change are: - The circulatory system -The Nervous System

It can be speculated, though no measurements or monitoring conducted, that the digestive and respiratory systems also experienced temporary change in rate of function. One small observation made was Graysons immediate need to urinate after consumption of the energy drink.

2. What body processes change during and after your experiment?

- Assumed rate of enzyme activity and digestion of digestive system are increased.
- Production of insulin to cope with influx of glucose in blood. - Stimulants and energy of Mother instigate heart pressure and rate increases. -All elevated rates and changes in body process return to normal ranges after effects of Mother wear off. - Increase in Peripheral Nervous System activity and delusional behaviour by the Central Nervous System.

3. In what ways does the body change during your experiment?

- Assumed that rate of enzyme activity and digestion of digestive system are increased after body realises presence of food.
Upon processing of nutrients, and importantly stimulants including caffeine, increase in blood glucose levels lead to the observed physiological effects, increase in insulin production, and behavioural effects by stimulants on the nervous system. Stimulants and energy of Mother also caused heart pressure and rate to increase.

- Heart rate and pressure wore off after high, though stayed slightly elevated. Behaviour returned to what is considered normal for Grayson.

4. In what ways does the body change after your experiment?

-Heart rate and pressure wore off after high, though stayed slightly elevated. -Behaviour returned to what is considered normal for Grayson. - Presence of urine in bladder triggered strong urge to urinate.

5. What factors may play a role in the body's response to your stimulus?
- Quantity of food already being digested by the digestive system. - Volume of liquids, including water, consumed and circulating in blood stream. - Height and Weight of individual. - Individuals suffering from diabetes or similar disease would yield varied results. - Concentration and amount of stimulus applied. - Extreme temperatures of environment outside of body. - Ongoing activity of the individual.

6. What body systems control or influence the body's ability to recover to normal?

- Insulin from the endocrine system will influence rate of glucose absorption.
- Function and efficiency of the circulation system. Detection of rising levels of nutrients.

- Ability of the nervous system to send a negative feedback response to the stimulus.

7. Why do you think that it is important for body functions to return to normal after exercise?

- If these functions were to stay abnormal, then the body would suffer immense stress and over sustained periods of time they would degenerate and essentially break from overuse.
- Over consumption of nutrients will occur. - Dehydration and fatigue would take place. - Its unrealistic to expect anyone to cope with abnormally high or low levels of body function, without experiencing severe side effects and even death.

8. What is Homeostasis?

- Homeostasis is the regulation of the bodys internal environment and to keep physiological conditions, in response to factors outside of the body, stable.

Conclusion
- Drinking liquids of high energy and stimulant content will trigger the body to seek ways to expend the energy. - Stimulants like caffeine, coupled with the energy will cause the heart to pump faster and harder. - There dont seem to be any lasting side effects. - Most importantly, energy drinks effect the nervous system and cause erratic and delirious behaviour by the individual. - Potentially, the over consumption may cause more serious side effects, of which may be long term.
