The 5-minute speech will win over the longer variety. Few points are
made or souls saved after the first 5 minutes of a monologue

- Little Yellow Book

So , I will keep this presentation as brief and informative as possible.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Mr Farrukh Butt and Saed Kurd , for giving me the opportunity to
work as an Intern at CH2MHILL.

Eduardo Ramirez and Saed Kurd for being my mentors throughout
the internship . They made this 3 months so enjoyable.

Zaheer Malik , my first buddy at the company. Thanks for guiding
me throughout this internship program

Wael Sbeih , for teaching and helping me with various topics . I
learnt a lot from you.

Paul Cooper , for making my tenure a very enjoyable one. Learnt a
lot from your experience. Thanks for all the tips on CAD.

Hector Ruiz , Folo and Waqas , for always supporting and
encouraging me throughout.

Safety Topic: UV Radiations
A) Cover up. Wear tightly-woven clothing that blocks out light. Try
this test: Place your hand between a single layer of the clothing and
a light source. If you can see your hand through the fabric, the
garment offers little protection

B) Use sunscreen. A sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15
blocks 93 percent of UV rays. You want to block both UVA and UVB
rays to guard against skin cancer. Be sure to follow application
directions on the bottle
C) Wear a hat. A wide brim hat (not a baseball cap) is ideal because
it protects the neck, ears, eyes, forehead, nose, and scalp.

D) Wear UV-absorbent shades. Sunglasses don't have to be
expensive, but they should block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB
radiation.

E) Limit exposure. UV rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and
4 p.m. If you're unsure about the sun's intensity, take the shadow
test: If your shadow is shorter than you, the sun's rays are the day's
strongest.

ABOUT ME!!
A Power System graduate student from University of Houston ,
currently involved in a Smart grid research at the university

Born and raised in India , in a Tamil language speaking family.

First engineer to graduate from the family , I used to visualize myself
as a great Engineer set to scale great heights by providing
constructive ideas to the people at large.

Love cooking food, playing computer games and riding bicycles

DREAM DREAM DREAM, DREAMS TRANSFORM INTO
THOUGHTS AND THOUGHTS INTO ACTION !!
- DR APJ ABDUL KALAM

Having grown up in a power plant environment , where my Father is
employed , I always dreamt of being an Electrical engineer right from
my childhood !!

Boilers , turbines , cooling towers fascinated me a lot more than
Lamborghinis and Bugatis.

It is this passion in me towards engineering , that pulled me
thousands of miles across globe to United States , in pursuit of a
better education and research environment.

Things I expected out of an Internship
1. Explore various aspects of industry

2. Apply my knowledge to practice

3. Gain new skills

4. Learn about my strengths and weakness so that I can correct
myself and perform effectively during my fulltime job

5. Build a good network of professional friends

6. Get a full time employment in this company

7. Lastly , buy an Ipad (my 4 years old dream )
How and why did I choose CH2M HILL.
1. Attended career fair at University of Houston, got a fair idea of
different companies located in and around Houston catering to my
specialization.

2. Shortlisted 5 companies out of them , CH2MHILL being one of
them because CH2MHILL is a global leader in consulting, design ,
operations and program management.

3. They offer service to a wide range of industries , from chemical
plants to nuclear plant , from bridges to panama canal expansion.
The company has left its foot prints in all the parts of the world.

4. I felt that working as an intern in CH2MHILL would provide me a
great experience in working with various aspects in electrical
engineering

What did I realize during my internship
1. Professor Robert Spiewalk was a blessing in disguise. (My
professor at university , who thought me power)

2. As a power engineering student , this internship was an eye opener
for me as I realized the importance of practical knowledge. I
understood that theoretical knowledge alone wont suffice

3. A perfect blend of theory and practical would be the quintessence
of engineering.

4. The term engineering is complete only when it is a blend of sound
technical knowledge, resource management skill, leadership
quality, adaptability and Multitasking. I believe this internship has
blessed me with all these qualities to be a triumphant engineer.

What I did this summer !!!
First week : Went through all the standards , guidelines and
specifications pertaining to the company. Had a chance to discuss
the load list with Wael.

First Month : Assisted Saed in formatting the specification document
for various machines and process used in the CHS project. Learnt a
lot of technical details about each of the equipments used in the
project.

Second month :
a) Started with Grounding and Bonding , Learnt Industrial standards
and protocols and tried to define hazardous classes for the
equipments.
b) started analyzing process flow diagrams and defined each
process. Made a rough draft of electrical equipments that are used in
the process for both ISBL and OSBL .

c) analyzed P&IDs and compared it with process flow diagrams and
located all the electrical equipments in the plot plan

d) Analyzed the plot plan and indicated the sources of power and
transmission line to the CHS facility

Third month :
Assisted Eduardo in finalizing the loads and came up with a load list
which determined the total Power that would be consumed by the
plant .

Distributed the entire loads in MCC and switchgears and assisted
Paul Cooper in coming up with a final single line diagram
How I feel today , after the completion of this internship

1. I feel confident , that I can actually work in a company and contribute
to their success.

2. Understood how important is to manage time effectively.

3. Realized that Work is very enjoyable when one is doing a good job.

4. Education is for life , not just for living

Technically , I learnt !!
How and where to use standards , codes and protocols used in the
industry

Understood the application of standards like NEC,NEMA,ANSI,API
and the reason why we use each of these standards.

My professor who thought me power in University of Houston was
polish. I thought IEC is the standard which is followed worldwide. It
was only after coming over to this intern I realized , every country
has its own standards .

Learnt how to interpret a P&ID and Process Flow diagram .

The level of detail each of these PFD and P&IDs provide was very
astonishing. I had no clue what was a process flow diagram before I
came here. I thought it was just one of those weird looking
engineering diagrams . It took me a day to appreciate what a single
page of diagram could convey.

It is used to indicate the instruments or control device attached to
the process
It also describes the control system architecture associated with the
project
Understood the application of various process control schemes like
a) Feedback Control
b) Cascade Control
c) Feed Forward Control
d) Ratio control
Understood the importance of a loadlist

This is the most neglected part of engineering curriculum for an
power engineer. We were never taught the importance of a loadlist.

In our university we would be given a set of loads and we would be
asked to perform load flow analysis. We concentrate more on the
mathematics behind an analysis . Hence this internship gave a me
deep insight of the process beyond mathematics.

I understood that the load list is the corner stone for every electrical
design , and its understanding is of utmost importance.

Learnt how to write the specification documents , and define the
basis of design.

I understood the importance of a specification document and a
datasheet. I realized that this is one document that an engineer
should read well before he steps into a project.

This documents highlights
(a) The codes and standards used in the construction
(b) Ambient conditions, Types of enclosures , grounding
(c) Wiring techniques , Nameplate information.
(d) The process of inspection and testing of the equipment
Understood how to classify hazardous class for every equipment
into Division , class and groups.

Learnt about the concepts Grounding and Bonding

In curriculum , the most convenient way of explaining things is by
assumption. Right from the start of my engineering study I have
always assumed values of efficiency, demand factors, load factors
and power factor and I thought things are very easy. Only after I
started this internship , I realized there is no word called assumption.
Every value being considered should have an substantial proof

Design of a Single line diagram , cables , MCCs , bus ducts

I got a real insight of what goes in to make a single line diagram.

I used to think that symbols like circuit switchers and disconnectors
that are used in the one line are very trivial and used to skip it while
drawing. After this internship I understood what each of these
components meant and why is it so important to show.

Suggestions!!
1. There is nothing I can complain because CH2MHILL is my first
employer and for anyone , the first employers are the best and
most special ones.

2. I really feel bad having missed out on the most interesting phase of
the project , The simulation in ETAP . I was so much excited to
lay my hands on ETAP and carry out simulations .

3. But I am surely hoping to get on to simulation the next time I come
here .

Thank You
