What is an SOP?
Standard operating procedures (SOP) are a
detailed explanation of how a policy is to be
implemented.

It is an established procedure to be followed
in carrying out a given operation or in a given
situation.
Why SOP?
The details in an SOP standardize the process and
provide a step-by-step how-to instructions that enable
anyone to perform the task in a consistent manner.

The SOP document serves as an instructional resource
that allows employees to act without asking for
directions, reassurance, or guidance

The more information provided in an SOP, the better
the quality of the SOP and more effective the protocol
will be.

Format of an SOP
Following are the primary sections in any SOP

Title a clear, succinct title describing the purpose of the SOP and
the conditions under which it can be reliably used.

Date date (including year) of authorship of the current SOP. If the
SOP has been revised then a Date of Revision and the Revision
Number should also be included here.

Name of the Author of the SOP

Purpose Brief explanation of the purpose of this SOP.

Scope and Applicability under what specific conditions can this
protocol be used reliably.

Format of an SOP
Introduction relevant background information on the system,
methods, and instruments used.

References - any relevant references to the peer-reviewed
literature.

Materials and Supplies list of any reagents including names of
suppliers used in this procedure. If the suppliers are obscure
sources, a list of addresses and contact information should be
provided as well.

Analytical Instrumentation list of any analytical instruments
including manufacturer and model numbers that have been used in
this procedure.

Format of an SOP
Cautions are there any specific health and safety precautions that
should be considered. For example, should gloves be worn? If so,
what kind? Are there any special procedures that should be
followed?

Personnel Qualifications what information the user must know or
be able to do understand before carrying out this protocol, i.e., is
any prior training required and if so what specific kind/form of
training?

Actual Protocol step-by-step set of instructions for accomplishing
the procedure of interest reliably.

Names of SOP Reviewers - names of those individuals who have
reviewed and approved the SOP for use.

Mobile Computing
Mobile Computing is a generic term describing the
application of small, portable, and wireless
computing and communication devices.

This includes devices like laptops with wireless LAN
technology, mobile phones, wearable computers and
Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) with Bluetooth or
IRDA interfaces, and USB flash drives.

What is Mobile Computing?
Mobile computing is humancomputer interaction.
Mobile computing involves mobile communication,
mobile hardware, and mobile software.
Mobile Communication issues include ad hoc and
infrastructure networks as well as communication
properties, protocols, data formats and concrete
technologies.
Mobile Hardware includes mobile devices or device
components.
Mobile Software deals with the characteristics and
requirements of mobile applications.
Mobile Computing Devices
Sensor : A very simple wireless device is represented by a sensor
transmitting state information. An example for such a sensor could
be a switch sensing the office door. If the door is closed, the switch
transmits this state to the mobile phone inside the office and the
mobile phone will not accept incoming calls.

Pager : A very simple receiver, a pager can only display short text
messages, has a tiny display, and cannot send any messages. Pagers
can even be integrated into watches.

Mobile Phones : Mobile phones with full color graphic display, on
the internet browser are the best source of information transfer.

Mobile Computing Devices
Personal digital assistant : The typical input device is a pen, with
built in character recognition translating hand writing into
characters. Web browsers and many other software packages are
already available for these devices.

Palmtop/pocket computer : The next step toward full computer are
pocket computers offering tiny keyboards, color displays, and
simple versions of programs found on desktop computers like
Spread Sheets etc.

Notebook/Laptop : Laptops offer more or less the same
performance as standard desktop computers; use the same
software, the only technical difference being size, weight, and
ability to run on a battery.

SOP for Mobile Computing
This SOP will contain the procedures for use of mobile
computing technology and devices in an organization.

The SOP is written down specifically for employees of such
organization.

It lays down the standards and protocols to be followed by
employees when dealing with information that is to be
transferred, stored or managed via mobile computation.
