Case study of Biogas Engine with 20kw Electricity
Generation
Evaluate the feasibility of a gasifier coupled with 20 kw diesel engine is to
meet the electricity requirement of a village. Cost of gasifier is 5,00,000 Rs.
Cost of Engine is 1,20,000 Rs. and Cost of generator is 1,50,000 Rs. Cost of
building and accessories is 95,000 Rs.O&M cost is 5% or total cost. Life or
gasifier is 10 years. Discount rate is 12%.load factor is 60% .Calculate the cost
of electricity generation.

Capital cost per year/kwh = 2,84,345/1,05,120
= 2.70 Rs./Kwh

Mass of Bio-mass = 36,900kg/year
Cost = 1Rs/kg (Assume labor cost)
Cost of Bio-mass = 36,900kg*1Rs/kg
= 36,900 Rs.
Cost of Electricity Generation = 36,900 Rs./1,05,120 kwh
= 0.3510 Rs./kwh
Total cost of Electricity Generation = Cost of Electricity Generation + Running cost
+Maintenance cost
Operating and Maintenance Cost = (5/100)*(2.70+0.3510)
= 0.1525 Rs./kwh



Total cost of Electricity Generation = Cost of Electricity Generation + Running cost
+Maintenance cost
= 0.3510+2.70+0.1525
= 3.20 Rs./kwh
Total cost of electricity generation is around 3.20 Rs./kwh.so this option is very good
for electricity generation rather than go with thermal power station because cost of
electricity generation in thermal power plant is around 6 Rs./kwh.
