"the Chymists are a strange
Class of Mortals, impelled by
an incomprehensible Impulse
to take their Pleasure amid
Smoke and Vapour, Fume and

Types of Chemistry?
• The study of the matter, its composition,
properties, and the changes it undergoes.
• Basic research gathers knowledge for
knowledge sake.
• Applied research is using chemistry to attain
certain goals, in fields like medicine,
agriculture, and manufacturing.
• Technological development typically
involves the production and use of products
that improve quality of life.
Branches of Chemistry
• Analytical Chemistry studies the composition of substances.
• Inorganic Chemistry studies substances without carbon.
• Organic Chemistry studies compounds containing carbon.
(known as o-chem)
• Biochemistry concerns itself with that of living things.
• Physical Chemistry studies behavior of substances. (known
as p-chem)
• Theoretical Chemistry is the use of mathematics and
computers to understand the principles behind observed
chemical behavior and to design and predict the properties
of new compounds.
