Lesson Overview Yesterday we spent some time covering what is a statistical question, and what is not a statistical question. Remember that a statistical question is one that has to be answered by gathering and collecting data, and the answers must vary. Example of a statistical question: What are the three favorite flavors of ice cream of the students that attend VSC? Not a statistical question: Who is your favorite movie star? Today we will learn how to organize data using what we call stem and leaf plots. We will use the data from yesterdays World Cup 2014 game between Brazil and Croatia. Stems & Leaves Before you create a stem and leaf plot, you need data!
Lets look at a sample class: There are 15 students in class 607 and these are their ages.
Step # 1 Find the data! Step # 2 Place the numbers in order from least to greatest. Task #1 1 minute - Place the above ages in ORDER from LEAST to GREATEST.
Stems & Leaves After placing the numbers in order, you will draw a stem and leaf chart below. The numbers in the stem column represent the tens place. The numbers in the leaf column represent the ones place.
0 1 2 3 4 5
Step # 3 Create your stem and leaf table Step # 2 Plot the numbers in order! Stem Leaf Ages of students in Class 607 Task # 2 Plot the age data of class 607 into the stem and leaf plot on the right. 2 Minutes! Yesterday was the first game of the World Cup between Brazil and Croatia. We are going to gather data from this game and create a stem leaf plot to answer questions! Task #3 Open the web page on the left. With a partner, gather the TOTAL SPRINTS for each player on team Croatia. You will see a row that says Sprints and a column that says Total. Gather the data for each player and create a stem and leaf plot of this data. 10 Minutes! Analyzing The Data 5 minutes Show ALL work. What was the mean number of sprints from team Croatia? What was the MEDIAN number of sprints from team Croatia? What was the mode?
