THE FILIPINO FAMILY

INVOLVEMENT IN
PRESCHOOL
Irene Hilado
Althea Alabanzasv
Learning took place
everywhere - in the home, learning
to plait pandanus into finely woven
mats and baskets; in the fields,
learning to cultivate taro and yams;
on the sea, learning to navigate
between islands.
Schools of today, unlike
traditional learning settings, are
often disconnected from home
and community. As students enter
school, their families may feel
detached from the learning
process.
FAMILY & SCHOOL
Family School
Ponder On These
Can the family and school work together?
If YES, how?
A FAMILY:
THEORETICAL VIEWPOINT
Functionalist View
Feminist View
Modernist View
FUNCTIONALIST VIEW
Each partner performed certain functions
Husband worked outside the home
Wife did housework and child care

FEMINIST VIEW
A system of male dominance gives husbands more power than their
wives.
Gender defines social roles and cultural characteristics
These roles have no biological reason behind them but are culturally
dictated; therefore, they are socially constructed
These roles appear to be constructed to give men power

Feminists argue that men
benefit from families at
the expense of women -
both in their personal
experience and broadly
because the family
sustains patriarchy in
society
MODERNIST VIEW
This includes whether or not to get married
and whether or not to have children, not
necessarily both
Individuals choose how they will act in new
family forms such as stepfamilies

THE MODERN FILIPINO
FAMILY
Filipino Family can be examined in modernization theory.
Introduced by Emile Durkheim and Max Weber.

According to Gelia Castillo and Juanito Pua (1963, p. 116) c the
Filipino family can be classified as "residentially nuclear but
functionally extended."

CHANGES IN THE FAMILY
[ MODERNIZATION]
1. Working wives and mothers
2. Changing role structure
3. Decline of the authority of the husband/father
4. More lenient norms and behaviour
5. Breakdown of the consanguineal

Km,

Kindergarten education is vital to the
academic and technical development of
the Filipino child for it is the period when
the young mind's absorptive capacity for
learning is at its sharpest. It is also the
policy of the State to make education
learner-oriented and responsive to the
needs, cognitive and cultural capacity, the
circumstances and diversity of learners,
schools and communities through the
appropriate languages of teaching and
learning. (REPUBLIC ACT NO.
10157)
EFA- Education for
All Act suggests the
inclusion of the
community
including the family
as the learning
environment of the
child
Does family involvement mean
attendance at Parent Teacher
Association (PTA) meetings?

Does it mean attending school functions?
Menun nee mesei. - Chuukese proverb
Sons and daughters are the treasures of each family clan.
--It involves the whole family to take
responsibility for the care and well being
of the children.
ALERT: IMPORTANT!
FAMILY INVOLVEMENT:
It helps to
ensure that
all children
have the
tools they
need for
success.
It encourages
the
development
of the whole
child.
It is based on
the notion of
shared
responsibility
for the child.
