Initial Investigation Phase
Ida Aryanie Bahrudin (DAT 20203)
Initial Investigation Phase
initial study on a certain project before making a
decision on whether or not the project can be
continued
The outcome of the study can help the management
to make a decision on whether to accept or to reject
proposed project.
The results:
1. One report (covers the
business consideration)
2. Development cost &
benefits
3. Proposed actions
Initial Investigation Phase
Initial Investigation Phase
STEP 1
Understanding Organisations Problem & Opportunities
STEP 2
Determining Project Scope and Limitations
STEP 3
Doing Information Search
STEP 4
Determining Project Feasibility
STEP 5
Estimating Time & Cost to Proceed with Development
STEP 6
Presenting a Proposal to the Management
Initial Investigation Phase
STEP 1
Understanding Organisations Problem & Opportunities
1. Develop a business profile to explain its business process and
functions
2. Know how the change influences business operations and other
information systems
Undertake a study to
understand the problem
Identify the benefits of
solving the problem with an
acceptable cost
A need to solve the problem
Develop an appropriate
solution
Determine the best solution
and proposed it
Detail out the chosen
solution
Implement the selected
solution
Control to ensure the
product being as estimated
Initial Investigation Phase
-To determine the project boundary as complete as possible by
using:
1. Graphical Model (illustrating the system)
2. Individual involved
3. Business process
Use Case Diagram
STEP 2
Determining Project Scope and Limitations
Initial Investigation Phase
-Limitations and needs are conditions for the system to achieve in
as per the stated specification or the estimated systems
usefulness.
Limitations
can involve
Hardware
Software
Time
Policy
Law
Cost
Example of limitations: order-system must receive input
from 15 departments outside the location
Initial Investigation Phase
STEP 3
Doing Information Search
Consists of various techniques depending on the kind of
information desired for investigating system request.
Analyse an
organisation
chart
Execute an
interview
Check existing
documentation
Check existing
documentation
Questionnaires
for users
Initial Investigation Phase
STEP 4
Determining Project Feasibility
Operational
Technical
# Operational: tries to measure how far the
solution proposed can be used in the
organisation

# Technical: evaluating the organisation
resources to develop or to buy the system

# Economic : tries to answer the questions
on whether the system to be introduced
can be developed within budgetary
constraints and whether can improve
economy
Initial Investigation Phase
Operational
Whether the management
& user support the project
With the new system, will
some of the workers
retrenched
Ehteher the schedule for
development is reasonable
Whether ethical issues
need to be handled
Technical
Whether the organisation
had enough resources for
h/ware, s/ware & network
Whether the proposed
technology or solution is
practical
Whether we have the
technology
Whether we have the
required technical skills
Economic
Determine the cost of the
following items:

1. People
2. The hardware And tools
3. The software that is
built-in-house and those
bought
4. Formal and informal
trainings
5. Licenses and fees
6. Consultation fees
Facilitation cost
Opportunity cost of not
developing the system

Initial Investigation Phase
STEP 5
Estimating Time & Cost to Proceed with Development
What information? How to get? How to analyze?
What sources of information do you use? & What are the problem
faced in getting info
Do you need interviews? How many people? How long?
Do you need questionnaires? Who will involved? How much time
required to complete the questionnaires and to get the results?
How much cost to analyse the information obtained, to provide the
report and also proposal?
Initial Investigation Phase
STEP 6
Presenting a Proposal to the Management
Item Content of the Item
Introduction Provide the introduction in general for the report. It
contains summarised explanations on the system, name
of individuals involved.
Summarised System
Request
Explains on the basis for system request.
Planning Contains the result of planning that has been made
including elaboration of project scope, limitation and
systems feasibility.
Proposal Proposal for the following action with acceptable reasons
and justification.
Time Duration and
Cost
Explain on the cost required, and the delivery of system to
user locations.
Estimated Benefits Tangible & Intangible benefits
Appendix All the appendices which can support the information
supplied.
