Knitting
Knitting is a method by which thread or yarn is
used to create a cloth. The knitted structure
consists of one set of yarn, weft or warp and is
divided into weft knitted fabric and warp
knitted fabric.

Classification of Knitting
Warp Knitting.
Weft Knitting.

Warp Knitting:
A type of knitted fabric construction in which the
yarns are formed into stitches in a lengthwise
manner. Warp knits are generally less elastic than
weft knits. Common examples of warp knits are
tricot knits and raschel knits.

Classification of Knitting
Weft Knitting:
A type of knitted fabric in which yarns are
formed into stitches in widthwise manner.
Common examples of weft knits are circular
knits and flat knits.

Warp Knitting
The stitches are produced in each course
simultaneously. Warp knit structure are as
following kinds:
Milanese knit.
Raschel knit.
Tricot knit
Crochet Knit

Milanese knit
The Milanese stitch produces a fabric very
similar to tricot. It can be identified by the fine
rib on the face & a diagonal pattern on the
back. However, Milanese fabric is superior to
tricot in smoothness, elasticity, regularity of
structure & friction resistance.

Raschel knit.

The Raschel knit ranks in importance of
production with tricot but it makes varieties of
products ranging from laces, power nets for
foundation garments, swimwear to carpets.
Raschel knitting is done with heavy yarn &
usually has a complex lace-like pattern.

Raschel Knit
Tricot knit

Tricot fabric is soft, wrinkle resistant . Tricot
knits are used for a wide verity of fabric
weights & design. It makes light fabric
weighting less than 4 ounce/square yard.
Some examples of tricot fabric are sleepwear,
boluses, dresses etc.

Crochet Knit

This basic stitch is used in hand crochet. This
construction is used in a wide variety of
fabrics ranging from nets & laces to bed
spreads & carpets, various types of edgings or
trimmings lace are also produced.

Weft Knitting
The following is a list of name of knit fabrics which are
commonly used to produced knit garments with weft
knitting:

Plain/Single/ jersey knit
Pique knit/ La-cost knit
Interlock knit
Rib knit
Terry knit
Fleece knit
Jacquard knit
Yarn dyed stripe knit
Feeder stripe knit
Engineered stripe knit

Plain/Single/ jersey knit

People call it jersey knit. Plain is produced by
the needles knitting as a single set, drawing
the loops away from the technical back and
towards the technical face side of the fabric. It
use as ladies hosiery.
Pique knit/ La-cost knit

Pronounced PEEK, this is the fabric that is
most associated with the original Lacoste
Alligator Polo shirt. Also sometimes called
mesh, pique is characterized by a textured
fabric face with lots of tiny holes and a fabric
back that is smooth.

Rib knit

A basic stitch used in weft knitting in which the
knitting machines require two sets of needles
operating at right angles to each other. Rib knits
have a very high degree of elasticity in the
crosswise direction. This knitted fabric is used for
complete garments and for such specialized uses
as sleeve bands, neck bands, sweater waistbands,
and special types of trims for use with other knit
or woven fabrics. Lightweight sweaters in rib knits
provide a close, body-hugging fit
Rib knit

There are 1X1 rib, 2X1, 2X2, 3X1, 3X2, 3X3, 5X2
ribs & so on. You count the number of ribs in
front & on back to determine what it is.

Interlock knit

A weft knit process producing a compound
fabric. Two 1X1 rib fabrics are interlocked or
inter knitted to form on cloth & are
characterized by fine ribs in the lengthwise
direction on the both sides of the goods. The
two rib courses are defend as one interlock
course.

Terry knit

A woven or knit uncut loop structure
produced as single faced with loop formation
on face & back. Size , shape & density of loop
formation may vary. They look like terry towel.

Fleece knit

One side loops like jersey, the other side
heavily brushed it is known as fleece knit.

Jacquard knit

It is a system of producing a patterned knit
fabric incorporating the jacquard system. The
system is the individual control of the
selection or inhabitation of the needles to
produce the design or pattern utilizing.

Yarn dyed stripe knit

In making color knitted fabrics, we usually would
use the following methods to color them:
Piece dye: for solid colors.
Yarn dye: for horizontal stripes.
Printing: for printed designs.

For piece dyed solid colors & prints, the process
of manufactures is pretty much the same as
woven fabrics.
Feeder stripe knit

The means you feed the knitting machine with
yarn of different colors & let the machine knit
as if knitting solid color fabrics.

Engineered stripe knit

When the size of the repeat of the stripe you
need is bigger than 2 it is beyond what the
feeder stripe method can do & you will have
to use Engineered Stripe method to make
this knitted fabric.
