PARENTING TIPS: WHAT DOES IT

TAKE TO BE A GOOD PARENT?

What does it mean by good parent?
Includes raising kids, practicing positive values, giving
protections, earn a living for their families and providing
other primary needs.

So, are you a good parent?

Show and set the right examples

Children learn from what they
observe (Social Learning Theory
Bandura)

Show positive values and qualities.

Be a good role model to your
children if you wanted them to act
the way you wanted them to.

Have the characterisitcs of love,
passion and caring

Love is one of the important factor to
every human in psychological
development. (Maslows hierarchy of
needs)

Give them a warm touch or a caring
hug.

Children if lack of love will lead to
negative effects like low self-esteem,
lack of confidence and others.

Let your children know that they are
loved

What kids need most is knowing theyre
important in their parents lives and loved
deeply. (David Elkind, Phd, author of The
Hurried Child)

They must know theyre loved so that
they dont feel neglected.

Make them feel more secured if they
know theyre loved.

Envelop them in a close circle of support

Having conversations with other adults to get
another opinion from different people.


Giving them chances to involve in what they
want.

Always listen to them.

Always attend their school activities when
necessary.

Giving moral support to them in anything they do
or involved in.

Praise good behavior shown by
your children

Praise is considered as a positive
reinforcement in behavioral
psychology.

Proper use of praise will increase
the frequencies of the actions and
eventually stays as a habit.

Never compare your children to
others, especially siblings.

Each child is individual and has their
uniqueness.
Accept their differences
unconditionally and instill in each
child the desire to pursue their
interests and dreams.
Failing to do so will lead to inferiority
complex, an idea that they can
never be good enough in your eyes.

moments to guide your children
of what is right or what is wrong

Teach your children how to think
rationally.
Teach them do decide the right way

Contents of what they watch
may not be suitable to their age.
They are likely to have
misguided views about how to
treat people if left unsupervised.
Children need guidance to form
good habits and characteristics.

Set rules and guidelines at home.

Clear and consistent rules give kids
structure, teach responsibility and
clarify right from wrong.

Set only reasonable rules and
enforce them reasonably.

Avoid harsh punishments.

Control your temper as much as you can.

Ask your children to pick fair punishments.

Allow them to make choices which will enable
them to make moral ones later.

Teach your children to put themselves in other
peoples shoes.

Get plenty of exercise.
Get enough rest.
Limit their time in playing video games and
laptops.

In a nutshell,

Parents must understand and play their roles
well.

Never neglect your children as this will cause
negative effect on their development.

Parents play the most important roles in shaping
children into a well-developed individual parallel
to the Malaysias National Philosophy of
Education.
