Node B - RNC Connectivity (at present)
Summary of Existing Connectivity between Node-Bs and RNC

At present , Node-B E1s connected to CPE-8 / CPE-21 / MW Mini link / 34Mbps
system / STM1 / ADM 4 / MADM equipments by E1 cables or OF cables.

This Node B CPE transmission equipments in turn connected to Nearby
Telephone Exchange Transmission equipments by OF cable.

It is further Extended to Main Telephone Exchange Transmission Centre.
Other node-B sites of respective SSA/SDCA are aggregated at Main Exchange
DTC Room where RNC is available.

Further all the E1s are aggregated in Huawei OSN MUX installed at TXN Room

The aggregated optical STM1 output extended to AOU board of RNC equipment.

Introduction of 3G Node B on IP
Media

25-06-11 NWP-1 CM 15
Introduction to 3G NW on IP Media.
At present vendors have provided 3.6 Mbps
speed in 3G Network by connecting each
Node B with RNC on 4/8 E1s. Now they are
implementing 14.4 Mbps speed in network by
updating Hardware/Software/opening codes in
the existing network.
In order to achieve 14.4 Mbps speed in all the
three sectors of the Node-B simultaneously, it
is necessary that backhaul connectivity
between Node B and RNCs is shifted on IP
Media from present ATM connectivity.
25-06-11 NWP-1 CM 16
Introduction to 3G NW on IP Media.
For this, connectivity at the RNC end is
required to be changed to GE interface
instead of STM-1(ATM).
The GE connectivity from RNC end is
to be established as follows for Node-B
IP connectivity.
1. RNC-NIB Tier1 Node.
2. RNC-MADM Transmission N/W

25-06-11 NWP-1 CM 17
Introduction to 3G NW on IP Media.
For this ,connectivity at the Node B end is
required to be changed to FE interface
instead of E1. The Node B FE interface will
be extended to RNC in following ways,
1. Node B - NIB Tier1/ Tier 2 Node- RNC.
2. Node B - MADM Transmission NW- RNC.
3. Node B FTTH NIB Tier 1/2 RNC.
4. Node B - FE to 8 E1/16 E1 Convertor-
MADM Tx NW- RNC.

Advantages of Iub Over IP I/F

1.Ethernet can provide higher bandwidth.
2. Cheap and better economy of scale.
3. Efficient transport.

For this connectivity the minimum requirements to be
met by BSNL are:
1. GE port (1+1) at NIB Tier 1 end.
2. 4 Optical patch cards for 1 GE connectivity is to be
extended between RNC and NIB Tier1 node.
3. RNC supports 1310 nm SFP for GE connectivity and
suitable SFPs may be arranged at NIB end .
4. After the physical connectivity, a separate VLAN Group
has to be created for the same.

different Switch rooms. OF Patch Cable of length 50
meter used between the nodes with LC type at both
ends.
1+1 GE interfaces extended between RNC and Tier1
Node.
Though different wavelength (1310 nm at RNC end & 1550
nm at NIB Tier I end) SFPs are used, it is working fine
and data rate also verified, since the receiver in both
ends will normally be wideband but the range will be
limited to the lower wavelength.

BSNL ACTIVITIES FOR
IMPLEMENTATION OF 3G
NETWORK ON IP MEDIA FOR
14.4 Mbps SPEED

25-06-11 NWP-1 CM 74
TN Circle emphasized the need to commence and
expedite the IP connectivity and told that atleast 150 Node
Bs per month should be shifted on IP media as per BSNL
CO instructions dated 03/06/2011.

BSNL Units (SSA Planning, Transmission, NIB Team
and GSM BSS team, Planning team are requested to
expedite the work of migration of Node B sites on IP
immediately.

All the teams of BSNL are requested to go in details of
media availability at each Node B sitewise and identify the
best options as suggested in previous slides for migrating
it on IP media.

25-06-11 NWP-1 CM 75
For Node B on IP media, first RNC of each SSA has to be
integrated to NIB Tier I /Tier II / MADM Network through
GE Links. SSA team has to arrange GE ports at NIB end as
well as MADM transmission end. In-charges of RNC team
has to coordinate with each and every BSNL team and M/s
Huawei to integrate the same.
Out of 1126 Node-Bs, 17 Node Bs are co-located with
Main TE /Tier I node and 12 Node Bs are co-located with
Tier II node, 270 Node Bs having CPE-8, 58 Node B sites
are connected with MADM systems. These 357 Node Bs
can be migrated on IP Media without any issues.
Coimbatore , Nagercoil, Puducherry, Hosur sites are to
be migrated to IP Media on Top Priority SDCAs.
Dark fiber working in Node B sites may be identified
and extend the FE connectivity through dark fibers
without outage of services.

25-06-11 NWP-1 CM 76
To implement the Node Bs on IP Media, there would be
requirement of SFPs at NIB end, Optical Patch cords and
connectors, etc may be arranged immediately.
Replacement of CPE 21 with available CPE 8 equipments
within the SSA may be analyzed and the requirement of
additional CPE 8 may be intimated to Circle transmission
planning by SSA team
Conversion of DMW sites to the OFC shall be planned
by SSA and the requirement shall be intimated to Circle
transmission planning.
Explore the possibilities of using FTTH NW for 3 G NW
on IP media.
Cuddalore, Virudhunagar, CRDA, Coonoor, NGC SSAs
does not have RNC equipments. These SSA Node Bs are
to integrated with NIB NW Tier I/II of that SSA and further
GE port from NIB NW is to be extended to respective
RNCs.
