Data mining (sometimes called data or
knowledge discovery) is the process of
analyzing data from different perspectives and
summarizing it into useful information -
information that can be used to increase
revenue, cuts costs, or both.
Data mining software is one of a number of
analytical tools for analyzing data. It allows
users to analyze data from many different
dimensions or angles, categorize it, and
summarize the relationships identified.
Technically, data mining is the process of finding
correlations or patterns among dozens of fields
in large relational databases.
Health Informatics or Medical infomatics is
the interdisciplinary study of the design,
development, adoption and application of
IT-based innovations in healthcare services
delivery, management and planning.
It deals with the resources, devices, and
methods required to optimize the
acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of
information in health and biomedicine.
Huge and complex volumes of data are generated by
healthcare
activities; un-automated analysis has become impractical;
Too many disease markers (attributes) now available for
decision making
Increased demand for health services: (Greater
awareness, increased life expectancy, )
-Overworked physicians and facilities,Stressful work
conditions in ICUs, etc.
DM can generate information that can be useful to all
stakeholders in health care, including patients by
identifying effective treatments and best practices.
The existence of insurance fraud and abuse impels
insurers to use DM
Evidence-based guidelines (in the form of
rules)
Clinical data (Pharmaceutical data, patient
data, medical treatments, length of stay)
Administrative data (Staff skills, Nursing
care hours, staff leaves, overtime)
Financial data (Drug costs, treatment
costs, staff salaries, accounting)

Heath Level Seven (HL7) is an ANSI-accredited
Standards Developing Organization (SDO)
operating in healthcare arena
Provides standards for data exchange to allow
interoperability between healthcare information
systems
HL7 focuses on the clinical and administrative
data domains
It is a not-for-profit organization made up of
volunteers providers, payers, vendors,
government

document standards (e.g., HL7 CDA),
: an exchange model for clinical
documents.
messaging standards: HL7( v2.x and
v3.0):an interoperability specification for
health and medical transactions.
Application standards:an
interoperability specification for the
visual integration of user applications eg
hl7CCOW.


Costs for health care facilities are reduced
By using a HL7 interface engine, health providers can
realize the benefits of existing information systems
without major reinvestment in new technologies,
lowering costs and extending the life and efficiencies
of current systems.
There is also opportunity to link to systems outside the
healthcare provider such as providers of outsourced
services like radiology and transcription.
The HL7 interface also improves work flow by allowing
medical professionals to focus on their core business
activities and provide quality healthcare.
Screening:Effective low-cost screening using disease
models that require easily-obtained attributes:
(historical, questionnaires, simple measurements)
Diagnosis:Assist in decision making with a large
number of inputs and in stressful situations.
Therapy:Based on modeled historical performance,
select best intervention course: e.g. best
treatment plans in radiotherapy


Biomedical/Biological Analysis:Analyzing blood
and urine
