A. Forms of the Verb Be
The following table illustrates the forms of the verb-be in
the present tense and the past tense, with subject
pronouns.

B. USING BE IN A SENTENCE
EVERY ENGLISH SENTENCE MUST
HAVE A VERB
EXAMPLE :
My mother is a teacher.
Haji Yusuf is very rich.
Common mistakes in writing

COMMON MISTAKES
a) That girl very clever.
b) You will safe with me.
a) That girl is very clever.
b) You will be safe with me.
CORRECTED SENTENCE
REMEMBER:
ADD be verb (am,are,is,was,were) before very, not, still,
always, never.
ADD be after modal verbs (will, can, must, etc.)
C. Be as part of another verb
WE ALSO USE BE AS PART OF ANOTHER VERB TENSES. FOR
EXAMPLES:
RAHMAN IS WATCHING TELEVISION.
RAHMAN WAS WATCHING TELEVISION.
THE ANSWER IS WRITTEN HERE.
THE CLUB WAS OPENED BY THE MINISTER.

Be verb-USAGE
Be helps the other verb denote the time of the action
Examples:
1. I am going to the circus >>present
2. The boy was feeling tired >>past

>> Be and verb work together to complete the meaning of the
sentence and denote the time of the action.
>> Verbs ending in -ing are always made up of more than one word
>> Be-am,are,is,was,were-always comes before the main verb
>> Be-am,are,is was,were-can be simply used or their own as main
verbs that denote the state or condition of a person or thing.

Negative
form : Add
not, e.g.
Ravi is not
angry.

6.7 THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS
THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE IS FORMED
FROM THE PRESENT TENSE OF THE VERB BE
AND THE PRESENT PARTICIPLE (-ING FORM)
OF A VERB.
1. WE USE THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE TO
TALK ABOUT THE PRESENT:
Talking about an activity now or at the
moment of speaking. For example :-
A. Look! The train is coming.
B. Im sorry, you cant speak to Raju because
hes sleeping.
C. Im just leaving work. Ill be home in an hour.
D. Please be quiet. The children are sleeping.

for something which is happening
before and after a given time
FOR EXAMPLE:
a) At eight oclock we are usually having
breakfast.
b) When I get home the children are doing
their homework.


for something which we think is
temporary:
FOR EXAMPLE:
a) Michael is at university. Hes studying history.
b) Im working in London for the next two
weeks.


for something which is new and contrasts with a previous state:
FOR EXAMPLE:
a)These days most people are using email instead
of writing letters.
b)What sort of clothes are teenagers wearing
nowadays? What sort of music are they listening
to?

to show that something is
changing, growing or developing:
FOR EXAMPLE:
a)The children are growing quickly.
b)The climate is changing rapidly.
c)Your English is improving.

for something which happens again and
again:
FOR EXAMPLE:
a)Its always raining in London.
b)They are always arguing.
c)George is great. Hes always laughing.
Note: We normally use always with this use.

2. We use the present continuous tense
to talk about the future
for something which has been arranged
or planned:
FOR EXAMPLE:
Mary is going to a new school next term.
What are you doing next week?

3.use the present continuous to talk about the past
When we are telling a story:
When we are summarising the story from a book, film or play,
etc.
FOR EXAMPLE:
a) Theyve been married for nearly fifty years.
b) She has lived in Liverpool all her life.

Note: We normally use the present perfect continuous for this:

used for things that are happening
right now
Example ; I am taking a shower right
now.

for things that are happening
nowadays
Example ; Many people are losing
their jobs nowadays.

Simple present
used for things that happen
regularly,
Example ; Sheila takes a shower every
evening.

for general facts
Example ; Birds fly in the sky.

But, with some verbs, we do not use the
present continuous.

PRESENT CONTINUOS
CORRECTED SENTENCES
a. Where do you go now?
b. These books are belonging to
the library.

a. Where are you going now?
b. These books belong to the
library.

D FORMING THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS
Verb ending in... How to make the -ING form Examples
one vowel + one consonant Double the consonant, then add
-ING
swim - swimming
hit - hitting
get - getting
one vowel + one consonant
+ E
Remove E, then add -ING come - coming
lose - losing
live - living
[anything else] Add -ING say - saying
go - going
walk - walking
With many verbs, you can simply add -ING to the end of the verb.
However, with some verbs, you need to change the ending a little.
