Introduction
As we work at Toy’s Company, we need to
produce a water rocket toy for children aged
12 years old or older and must be safe for use.
This water rocket toy should fly considerably
higher vertical height and longer flight time
than other toy rocket on the market.
This water rocket toy is powered by air-
pressure and water. Also, its visual
appearance should be streamlined.
Objective
 To Identify problems, and then try to solve the problem .
 To cultivate the spirit of co-operation of the group.
 To find out defects and rectify after the test.
 To increase water rocket ’s interest.
Preparation of material
 To use two 2 liter pop bottles for building a
water rocket
 To build other elements of water rocket: nose
cone, empennages and parachute
 To build a launching pad to help keeping the
water rocket flying vertically
 To develop a website for illustrating all the
concepts and theories
Theory
Newton’s Third Law of Motion

‧Rocket launcher
→ keep the bottle fixing on a confined launch pad

‧Pump air into the confined area

→ pressure inside the plastic bottle exceeds the sustainable level of
the rocket launcher
→ water rocket separate from it

‧Water will spout out of the bottle to the ground

→ action force

‧Water rocket will be pushed by a reaction force

→ opposite direction to the action force
Theory
‧The decisive factors of rocket’s power
→ pressure inside the bottle
→ spouting speed of water

‧The value of both factors is high

→ rocket’s power will become greater

‧Parachute can keep the rocket dropping steadily

→ flight time will be longer

‧Concept of streamline
→ installing the nose cone and empennages
→ keep the rocket stably flying

Empennages
The making process of parachute:
The making process of empennage:
1. Prepare a hexagon with material
1. Cut a trapezoid of material plastic bag. Each side is in 400mm
transparent film as shown above with 120° interior angle
2. Cut a Ø74 hole in the middle of the
hexagon
3. Prepare 6 equal length ropes
4. Tie the rope to every edge

The nose cone is made of cardboard.

1.Cut the cardboard to a fan-shaped

2.Fold it to a cone

The launch pad

This figure shows our water rocket, the

launch pad with the launching guidance.
The problem we faced
• How to let the water rocket launch vertically ?
 We made a launching guidance on the launch pad which can help guiding
and let the water rocket vertically launch.

• How to let the water rocket fly and then drop steadily?
 Using empennages and parachute.
Sticking the empennages at the bottom of the main body.
Installing the parachute at the top of the bottle(main body).

• Try to infuse different volume of water into the bottle(main body), and then to
determine the volume of water infused in order to let the water rocket fly to
the highest point.
Conclusion
In conclusion, our water rocket launch was
very successful. In the making process of
water rocket, although we faced a lot of
problems, we could still solve them by our
teamwork.

Finally, we successfully produced a water

rocket which can achieve the production
requirements.
