Helena Bonici

This was first formed by Hans Krebs a British biochemist.

It occurs in the matrix of the mitochondria.
It is a series of oxidation-reduction reactions.
Another name for it is: tricarboxyclic acid cycle or TCA.
TCA Krebs Cycle

Pyruvate + NAD + CoA acetyl CoA + NAD-H + CO
2

The pyruvate is oxidised as it loses its H.
The H is accepted by the NAD to reduce it.
An acetyl group forms and combines with CoA.
CO
2
is formed from each pyruvate group.

Link Reaction

Acetyl CoA + C
4
molecule C
6
molecule

The acetyl CoA exists from the link reaction.
Krebs Cycle Step 1

C
6
molecule 2CO
2
+ H + C
4
molecule+ ATP

The ATP is a result of substrate-level phosphorylation.
Krebs Cycle Step 2

C
4
molecule + acetyle CoA C
6
molecule

It is a repetition of step 1 again.
Krebs Cycle Step 3

It produces-
Reduced coenzymes such as: NAD & FAD*
They have the potential to produce ATP.
One molecule of ATP
Three molecules of CO
2.

The pyruvate, from the link reaction, is produced from
glucose with two pyruvate from one glucose. 2:1 ratio.

*FAD after two molecules of CO
2
between the C
6
molecule being
converted into a C
4
molecule. It also isnt as powerful as NAD.
