Ratios and Unit Rates
Section 6-1
Objectives: We will be able to write and simplify
ratios.
We will be able to find rates and unit
rates.
We will be able to express rates with
different units.
Vocabulary
A ratio is a comparison of two
quantities by division.

A rate is a ratio that compares two

quantities with different units.

A unit rate is a rate that has a

denominator of one.
Ratios
Ratios may be written in one of
three ways:
10 to 15
10 : 15
10
15

Regardless of how you write it,

a ratio is read “10 to 15”
Reducing Ratios
Ratios are
reduced just like
fractions. That 10 10 ÷ 5 2
is, find the = =
common factor 15 15 ÷ 5 3
for both numbers
and divide it out.
Now You Try!
Reduce each ratio:
1. The number of boys in the class
to the number of girls.

2. The number of months that end

in “y” to the total number of
months.
Unit Rates
Recall from our Math Reviews that
unit rates always ask how much
per 1 (i.e. a 1 in the denominator).

If given two quantities not equal to

one, to make a unit rate, divide the
top number by the bottom number
(Example on next slide)
Unit Rate
Find the unit rates for the following chart:
Now You Try!
Find each unit rate.
1. This Thanksgiving, I travelled 700
miles in 10 hours.

2. I have 920 points total for 8

assignments.
Changing units
Sometimes, to make them more
meaningful or useful, we will need
to change the units on a rate

To do so, we will need to remember

that rates are a division. We’ll also
need to use the principles of cross-
canceling fractions.
Changing Units
Change 27 feet per second to inches per second.

Start by writing 1 ftin 324 in

27 ft 12
the rate as a ⋅ =
division 1 sec 11ftft 1 sec
Second we multiply by fancyunits
Next change “ones”.
as needed to finish
This might change the look of the
the multiplication and get the correct
problem, but not its value.
units

Finally, we multiply to get our answer.

Another Example
(not animated)
A pool fills at 12 quarts per minute.
Find out how many gallons per
hour the pool fills.
Before You Try!
Please copy down (and use!!!) these
helpful English conversions:
1 mile = 5280 feet
1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
1 pint = 2 cups
1 quart = 2 pints
1 gallon = 4 quarts
1 pound = 16 ounces
Now You Try!
Change $7.10 per hour to dollars
per minute.

Change 65 miles per hour to feet

per second.
Try some more!
Convert 52 inches per minute to
yards per hour.

Change 36 miles per year to inches

per hour.
Some thoughts about why.
Why would we possibly bother with this?
At the 2008 Olympics Usain Bolt ran the 100
meter dash in 9.69 sec. How fast is that?
(We change rates to gain meaning)

If one job pays a yearly salary of $45,000 and

another pays $20 an hour, which pays more
assuming 40-hour work weeks?
(We change rates to solve problems)
Homework!
For homework, please complete the
following problems.

LAST NIGHTS ASSIGNMENT:

Page 290 (294) #1-16

TONIGHT’S ASSIGNMENT:
Page 290 (294) #17-22, 27-29
Ticket to Leave
Use the table to answer the following
questions
a) For each class,
Clas Number Number write the ratio of
s of Boys of the number of
Students boys to the total
number of
students.
A 6 30
b) In both classes,
B 4 24 combined?
c) Which class has
the greater ratio of
boys to students?
