What Do We Want From DSL?

High-speed access over existing copper wires

Wideband technology employing a pair of DSL
devices

Make full use the available frequency spectrum-
resulting in multimegabit services capabilities

Private and Confidential
32
What is ADSL
ADSL = Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line

ADSL uses the standard Telephone line to
operate.

Services are concurrent and independent, voice
and data functions simultaneously.

Multimedia service applied as an overlay on-top
of existing telephone service to the INTERNET

Private and Confidential
33
How Does DSL Work?
DSL technologies exploit the unused frequency spectrum of standard
telephone wire (i.e. 4kHz 1.1MHz)

Advancements in modulation and error-correction techniques enable multi-
megabit transmission over lines that previously supported only voice-grade
modems.

ADSL Performance
Upstream: up to 1Mbps

Downstream: from 1 Mbps to 8 Mbps

Performance is dependent on the distance from the subscriber to
the central exchange

The speed is much higher than regular analog modem
(1Mbps vs 56Kbps)

Distance: up to 5km (~16,000 feet)

Always on connectivity password is not needed

IP Addressing

10 121 194 193 . . .

Every machine on the Internet has a unique identifying number,
known as IP address.
Each IP address is 32 bits long and is composed of four 8-bit fields,
called octets.
The octets are splits into two sections :
Network ID : Identifies the network that a computer belongs to.

Host ID : Identifies the actual computer on the network.

Alternate DNS server : 10.253.0.13 (fixed)

Domain Name Server (DNS)
- The Domain Name System (DNS) is a distributed Internet directory service. DNS is used
mostly to translate between domain names and IP addresses, and to control Internet
email delivery. Most Internet services rely on DNS to work, and if DNS fails, web sites
cannot be located and email delivery stalls.

Subnet mask
-A mask used to determine what subnet an IP address belongs to. An IP address has
two components, the network address and the host address. For example, consider the
IP address 10.35.205.1. Assuming this is part of a Class B network, the first two numbers
(10.35) represent the Class B network address, and the second two numbers (205.1)
identify a particular host on this network.

after product is turned on
End-user must verify that they are using the AC
adapter provided with the device. It must securely
connect to AT-AR250E and a wall socket/power
strip.
DSL LED does not illuminate
after phone cable is attached
Make sure to use a standard telephone line
(provided with the device). Make sure you had
correctly connected the device. Wait 30 seconds
to allow AT-AR250E to negotiate a connection
with ADSL service provider.
Ethernet LED does not illuminate
after Ethernet cable is attached.
End-user must verify that the Ethernet cable is
securely connected to the hub/PC and to AT-

PC cannot access the Internet Use the ping utility to check whether your PC can
communicate with AT-AR250E LAN IP address. If
it cannot, check the Ethernet cabling, and check
the LED status.
Check the gateway IP Address on the computer
is a valid IP address, if it is not, correct the
address.
Verify with GITN the DNS server specified for the
PC is valid.

PCs cannot display web pages
on the Internet.
Verify that the DNS server specified on the PCs
is correct. You can use the ping utility to test
connectivity.
