and a maximum of 5 specimens for each face
to be tested.
Specimen shall be square and 225mm x 225
mm in size.

Test Procedure:
Ensure that the test apparatus is at ambient
temperature at the start of the test.

10W and turn it off.
Record the output from thermocouples.

Test Procedure:
Conditions for test:
Expression of result:
The test sample shall
comprise a minimum

maximum of 5
specimens for each
face to be tested.
Propagation index is expressed
inwithout suffix where
The fire propagation Index shall
be stated with a suffix R
where four or five specimens
have to be tested to obtain three
valid results.
Where less than three valid
results are obtained from five
specimens, no fire propagation
index shall be stated and the
product shall be designed
unsuitable for assessment by this
method.

according to part 7, Class 1 implies that the
propagation of flame after 1.5 min shall be 165mm.
Introduction
Specifies a method of test for measuring the lateral
spread of flame along the surface of specimen of
product orientated in vertical position under opposed
flow conditions.
First published in 1971, then revision was made in
1987.
BS 476 Part 7:1997, supersedes the above two
revisions.

Scope
To determine the performance of a product when it is
subjected to conditions of test specified in this part
of BS 476.
Classifications system based on rate and extent of
spread of flame.
The test result is classified according to performance
as Classes 1 to 4.

Apparatus
Radiation panel and surround:

, Specified value of
irradiance 0.5 kW/m

.
Specimen holder: Water cooled.
Pilot Burner
Gas and air supply: Natural gas or
propane.
Test Environment: Volume at least
400m
3
.

General Arrangement of specimen holder
Ignite the pilot flame.
Insert the specimen into the
specimen holder, and swing
the specimen holder into
test position.
Start the timing mechanism
i.e. start the test.
Extinguish the pilot flame 1
min after the start of test.
Terminate the test when
flame front reaches the
825mm reference line or
after 10 min has elapsed,
whichever is shorter.

Results :
Observations : Classification of Results :
For each specimen, record:
1. The time at which flame front crosses
each vertical reference line;
2. The max. extent of spread of flame
during first 1.5 min from start of test;
3. The max extent of spread of flame
during the whole test;
4. The time and distance at which
maximum spread of flame reached;
5. Any spread of flame that extends for
less than 50mm whilst the pilot flame is
till on as less than 50mm.

VERTICAL FIRE FURNACE

MSFD/MFD shall comply with BS 476: Part 20.
MSFD/MFD shall be tested in accordance with the
procedure specified in BS 476: Part 20 with respect
to the requirements of elevated temperature and air

Introduction
First revision of BS 476 Part 1 published in 1947 as
BS 476 Part 8.
Revision of Part 8 republished in 1972.
The four parts, BS 476 Part-20, 21, 22 & 23, taken
together constitute a complete revision of BS 476 Part
8 published in 1987.
The objective of determine fire resistance, as described
in this part of BS 476 is to assess the behaviour of a
specimen of element of building construction when
subjected to defined heating and pressure conditions.

Scope
This part specifies heating conditions,
methods of test and criteria for
determination of fire resistance of
elements of building construction. The
tests are appropriate to the following:

Clauses in Part-8 Revised Parts
Walls and partitions (load bearing and non load bearing)
Part 21
Floors
Flat roofs
Columns
Beams
Suspended ceilings protecting steel beams Part - 23
Door and shutter assemblies
Part - 22 Glazing
Ceiling membranes
Testing
Test Procedure:
The specimen shall be heated in a
furnace which can produce a
positive pressure.
Standard Heating Conditions:
The temperature of the furnace
shall be controlled to vary with
time as closely as possible in
accordance with standard
time/temperature curve.

Test Procedure:
Observations & Results:
Observations during test: Test Results:
Recording:
Stability: The deformation of
specimen, occurrence of
collapse, or any other factor
which could affect its stability.
Integrity: In elements which
have separating function the
presence of cracks or other
openings shall be noted.
Insulation: In elements
having separating function
,the temperature conditions
of the unexposed face of
specimen at intervals not
exceeding 5 min.

Test results stated in
the Time in minutes
from start of the test
until failure has
occurred under one or
all of the criteria.
Criteria of failure:
General Conditions:
Non-load bearing : Failure shall be deemed to occur
when collapse of the specimen takes place.
Load bearing : A load bearing specimen shall support
the test load during the prescribed heating period and
also after 24 h after the end of heating period.
Insulation : Failure shall be deemed to occur when the
mean temperature of the unexposed surface of the
specimen increases by more then 140 C above initial
temp.
Floors and Flat roofs: According to above all criteria of failure.
Columns: Compliance with Stability
Beams: Compliance with Stability. Shall be deemed to have failed when
the max. deflection exceeds L/30, where L=Clear span.
Suspended ceiling protecting steel beams: The limit of effective
protection shall be deemed to have occurred; panels become dislodged,
temp. at any beam
Door and shutter assembly & Glazing : Compliance with all the
three criteria of failure. Failure shall be deemed to have occurred if an
unobstructed gap or fissure exceeding 6mm in width by 150mm in length
exists or develops. If sustained flaming more than 10 s occurs on
unexposed face, it shall constitute failure.
Ceiling Membranes: Compliance with Criteria of failure.
