Present tense usage
Present tense is used in daily life to express the idea that an
action is repeated or usual. The action can be a habit, a hobby,
a daily event, a scheduled event or something that often
happens. It can also be something a person often forgets or
usually does not do. It can also be used to express truths or facts.


Types of Present Tenses
There are 3 types of present tense:
Present simple
Present progressive
Present perfect

Present Simple
Present simple tense can be expressed as:
1. Affirmative
2. Negative
3. Interrogative

1. Affirmative
The formula for affirmative present simple tense is:
Subject + Verb's 1st form + s/es + Object
S/es is used with : He, She, It, Name & (Singular Forms)
Examples:
1. She loves flowers.
2. I play music.
3. They sing songs.
4. He likes food.

2. Negative
The formula for negative present simple tense is:
Subject + Do not/Does not + Verb's 1 st form + object
Examples:
1. I do not like singing.
2. He does not like flowers.
3. She does not want action figures.
4. They do not like football.
3. Interrogative
The formula for interrogative present simple tense is:
Do/Does + Subject + Verb's 1 st form + object
Examples:
1. Does he like flowers?
2. Do you want chocolate?
3. Does she like you?
4. Do they play hockey?

Present Progressive
Present progressive tense can be expressed as:
1. Affirmative
2. Negative
3. Interrogative

1. Affirmative
The formula for affirmative present progressive tense is:
Subject + is/am/are +Verb's 1 st form + ing + object
[ 'am' is used with : 'I' only.
'are' is used with : You, We, They .
'is' is used with : He, She, It, Name .]
Examples:
1. I am singing songs
2. They are studying
3. He is playing music
4. She is drinking water

2. Negative
The formula for negative present progressive tense is:
Subject + is/am/are + not + Verb's 1 st form + object.
Examples:
1. I am not singing songs
2. He is not watching television
3. They are not playing music
4. She is not eating chocolate
3. Interrogative
The formula for interrogative present progressive tense is:
Is/Am/Are + Subject + Verb's 1 st form + ing + Object
Examples:
1. Is she watching television?
2. Is he drinking water?
3. Are they watching movies?
4. Are you eating chocolates?
Present Perfect
Present perfect tense can be expressed as:
1. Affirmative
2. Negative
3. Interrogative

1. Affirmative
The formula for affirmative present perfect tense is:
Subject + has/have + Verb's 3rd form + object.
Has is used with : He, She, It, Name (Singular Forms)
Have is used with : I, They, You, We.
Examples:
1. I have watched television
2. He has eaten chocolate
3. She has played hockey
4. They have sung songs


2. Negative
The formula for negative present perfect tense is:
Subject + has/have + not + Verb's 3 rd form + Object
Examples:
1. I have not eaten chocolate
2. She has not watched television
3. He has not played hockey
4. They have not sung songs
3. Interrogative
The formula for interrogative present perfect tense is:
Has/Have + Subject + Verb's 3rd form + Object
Examples:
1. Has he sung songs?
2. Have they watched movies?
3. Has she played music?
4. Have you eaten chocolate?
