STRATEGIES WITH COOPERATIVE & COMMUNICATIVE LEARNING ACTIVITIES John Paul Loucky ( Seinan Womens University) INTRODUCTION Reading is complex, multi-faceted activity, involving a combination of both lexical and text-progressing skills that are widely recognize as being interactive.
Two major approaches in helping development of fluency in learners are :
INTENSIVE READING
EXTENSIVE READING EXTENSIVE READING Extensive reading is reading as much as possible, for your own pleasure, at a difficulty level at which you can read smoothly and quickly without looking up words or translating to English as you go. DEFINITION : - Intensive Reading is not a careful, single reading, but is a method based on a variety of techniques like scanning, the surveying techniques of planning your purpose, and others.
OBJECTIVE To help learners comprehend written texts. To become more aware of text organization to better comprehend. To learn how to use and monitor effective reading strategies. To develop general literacy skills necessary to generate productive expressions in L2.
INTENSIVE READING COMPONENTS OF FLUENT READING (Grabe, 1991) 1. Automatic word recognition skills 2. Structural and vocabulary knowledge about words 3. Formal discourse structure knowledge 4. Background knowledge about content and the world 5. Skill in using essential reading strategies , evaluative skills and an ability to synthesize or compare texts 6. An ability to monitor ones own reading skills and strategies CHARACTERISTICS OF EXTENSIVE READING (Day & Bamford, 1998) Students read as much as possible Students select what they want to read Reading is its own reward Reading is individual and silent Reading speed is usually faster TECHNIQUES FOR BUILDING VOCABULARY 1. Draw It Game 2. Write It Game 3. Manipulate It 4. Word Tables 5. Word Grids 6. Word Boxes 4 MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD READING 1. Adjusting reading rate or flexibility. 2. Building comprehension and retention skills. 3. Developing concentration ability. 4. Critical and creative evaluation and insight. JAMESTOWN EDUCATIONS SIX STRATEGIES 1. Monitoring comprehension 2. Solving reading problems 3. Personalizing/connecting with real life experiences 4. Commenting/interpreting by organizing within advanced GO 5. Visualizing 6. Predicting 7. * social interaction FOUR STRATEGIES MOST APPROPRIATE TO USE BEFORE 1. Acquiring critical core vocabulary (High frequency keywords) 2. Activating prior knowledge 3. Previewing the selection 4. Setting a purpose of reading. ARRANGEMENT DURING READING EXAMPLE Guided Silent Paired Choral Echo Radio Reading BENEFITS Improves learners comprehension and critical thinking Helps learner better review, analyze, reflect and respond to selections Extend learners comprehension and communication skills. Students involvement in the story deepens. Improves students communication and cooperative learning skills simultaneously COLLABORATIVE STRATEGIC READING (CSR) Example Group roles (ex: leader, chunk expert, encourager and time-keeper) Recording (ex: Comprehension games) Advantages Active involvement is stimulated among students. Help to foster greater interest and retention among learners. Four reading strategies Preview Click and chunk Get the gist Wrap up COOPERATIVE LEARNING GROUPS ENCOURAGEMENT Solve problems together in a calm manner Cooperate rather than compete Contribute ideas to the group Help in making good group decisions Listen carefully to learn from each others ideas ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS Positive interdependence Considerable face-to-face interaction among students Individual accountability Explicit social skills instruction Process evaluations following each sessions ADDITIONAL STRATEGIES Revisiting Reviewing Rehearsing Reading Reflecting and Responding Soar to Success Clarifying Predicting Questioning Summarizing Reciprocal Teaching Reading rate flexibility High levels of comprehension and retention Ability to focus attention, ask question, and predict accurately about various texts Skills in critical evaluation High vocabulary levels which facilitate automatic recognition of most common words read. MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD READERS CONCLUSION Wider extensive reading is helpful for broadening exposure to the target language meanings and forms, while Intensive Reading serves to deepen cognitive processing through learning and practicing specific lexical and reading comprehension skills and strategies in a more clearly focused and intentional manner .
