Talking About Chores

In this session we will practice how to:
Understand the meaning of some phrasal verbs
Use phrasal verbs appropriately

Look at the pictures and complete the statements that follow.

Activity 2 - Solutions
1. Pick up your dirty socks from the floor if you dont want Mom to
throw them away.
2. Check with her before you take the car anywhere.
3. Never lie to Mom; you wont get away with it!
4. When your friends come over, make sure you introduce them to
Mom.
5. After they leave, clean up the mess they make.
6. Turn off all lights and fans when you leave a room.
7. Take off your dirty shoes before you enter the house.
8. Stand up and greet Moms friends when they visit.
9. Never get into an argument with Mom; you wont win.
10. If Mom asks you to do something, hurry up and do it!
Activity 2 - Solutions
11. Look for a good gym and join up.
12. Work out at least three times a week.
13. Warm up before you start exercising.
14. Dont reach for the chocolate in the fridge; have a piece of fruit!
15. In fact, throw all the chocolates away!
16. When the exercise routine gets boring, dont give it up; just keep at
it!
17. Sit down when youre eating; eat slowly and enjoy your food.

Recipe Mix-up Solutions
Indian Chicken Biryani Rice

Cut 500 grams boneless chicken breast
into thick chunks. Wash and soak 1 cups
of Basmati rice.
Pour 3 cups of water into a saucepan. Add
the chicken, a 1-inch piece of cinnamon, a
bay leaf and 5 peppercorns to the water.
Cover with a lid. Turn down the flame and
cook until the chicken is tender.
Take the chicken pieces out of the chicken
stock and keep aside.
Chop up 3 medium-sized onions, 5 pods of
garlic and a 1-inch piece of ginger.
Halve 2 tomatoes and cut them into thin
slices.
Heat 4 tablespoons of oil in a wide, flat-
bottomed pan. Add a teaspoonful of
cumin seeds to the oil.


Tip the onions, ginger and garlic into the
oil. Cook for 1 or 2 minutes on a high
flame. Now add the tomatoes and turn
down the flame. Cook until the juice starts
running from the tomatoes.
Drain the water out of the soaked rice.
Add the chicken stock to the pan with the
onion mixture. Cover with a lid and bring
to a boil.
Slowly add the rice to the stock. Add 1
heaped teaspoon of salt, a teaspoon of
red pepper powder, 1 teaspoon coriander
and a teaspoon turmeric powder. Lower
the flame and cook until the water in the
pan has dried up.
Turn the biryani out on a flat serving dish.
Serve with chilled yogurt.
Recipe Mix-up Solutions
Indian Rice Pudding

Remove the seeds from about 5
green cardamom pods.
Crush the seeds into a fine
powder.
Soak a cup of white rice for 30
minutes; drain and grind into a
thin paste.
Bring 2 litres of milk to a boil.
Turn down the flame and stir in
the rice paste.
Keep on stirring until the mixture
thickens; this will take about 20
minutes.


Add the cardamom powder to
the milk / rice mixture; stir well.
Add cup sugar to the mixture.
Stir well and cook for 5 minutes.
Take the mixture off the flame
and pour it into a dessert bowl.
Serve chilled.

Activity 4: Sample Dialogue
Ann wakes up at 7:00 every morning. He puts the kettle on the stove and
makes himself a cup of tea. Then he gets dressed and has breakfast.
Before leaving the house, An turns off all the lights and fans and turns on
the burglar alarm. Then he walks to the train station.
He gets on the train at North Street Station, and gets off at the station
near his office
