WHAT IS WATER CONSERVATION?
Water conservation encompasses the policies, strategies and
activities to manage fresh water as a sustainable resource, to protect
the water environment, and to meet current and future human
demand. Population, household size and growth and affluence all affect
how much water is used. Factors such as climate change will increase
pressures on natural water resources especially in manufacturing and
agricultural irrigation.
FACT
15-20% of water
consumed in the house is
used in the laundry ,
making this room a high
consumer of not only
water but also energy and
detergents
WAYS TO CONSERVE AND
PRESERVE WATER
1. Dont use the toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket
Every time you flush a CIGARETTE ,facial tissue or other small bit of trash,
five to seven gallons of water is wasted.
2. When brushing your teeth, run water only to rinse the brush, and turn the
water off while brushing.
3. Shower instead of taking baths
Turn the shower off when soaping down or washing hair. Turn the shower on to
rinse.

CONSERVATION OF WATER IN WASHROOMS:
FACT
Running water while
brushing teeth wastes
more water than what
one person needs for
an entire week
CONSERVING WATER IN THE KITCHEN:
1. Wash dishes by hand and use the sink to both wash and rinse dishes
Try not to rinse dishes under running water. Rinse them in a separate sink of
water.
2. Stack and run a full dishwasher
FACT
A family of 4 uses 881
gallons of water per
week just to flush
their toilet

CONSERVING WATER IN THE GARDEN:
1. Install drip watering systems
2. Do not water during the hottest part of the day
Water during the cooler part of the day to prevent evaporation. It may be
early in the morning or at night.

CONSERVING WATER OUTDOORS:
1. Use a broom and a bucket of water to clean driveways and sidewalks
rather than a steady flow of water from the hose.
2. Check faucets and pipes for leaks. A small drip from a worn faucet
washer can waste 20 gallons of water per day. Larger leaks can waste
hundreds of gallons.

IMPORTANCE OF WATER
CONSERVATION
Saving water is important from the environmental standpoint
because it increases the amount of useable water that is available
overall. Polluted water and saltwater are not only bad for humans to
drink, but can damage crops and will even cause problems or grazing
fields and trees as well.

Clean water is needed to combat droughts that are becoming
more common in major agricultural sectors, and is also vitally important
to disaster relief efforts focused on areas where local water may be
contaminated with potentially deadly bacteria.

Without water conservation, the amount of fresh water
available to assist in these situations will be drastically reducedand
that's not even counting the water shortages that may occur in other
areas as the water supplies become more in demand.

EFFECTS OF WASTING
WATER
Although everyone is aware of the fact that wasting water is bad,
many people do not truly understand why. In addition to a higher water bill,
leaving a faucet on while brushing teeth, taking long showers and allowing
broken sprinklers to leak hundreds of gallons can all have major
consequences for the environment. There are several ways water is currently
consumed as well as several ways to cut back on this consumption.

Residential Use
The World Health Organization estimates that one out of every six people
do not have access to safe drinking water, and approximately 3,900 children
die every day due to waterborne illness. While residential water use only
accounts for about one tenth of the total water consumption, every little bit
helps and if everyone were to be conscientious about their water usage, the
amount of water saved would be substantial.

Industry
Water is used in many of the steps involved in manufacturing products,
from fabrication and processing to washing and transport. Luckily,
industrial users are at the forefront of the water conservation movement.
Many businesses, such as Coca Cola, are steps ahead of government
legislation. The soft-drink giant has promised to cut water consumption by
20 percent by 2012. If consumers and industrialists alike urge farmers to
follow this trend, the world will have water for many more decades to come.
