ENVIRONMENT
What is an environment?
It is the surroundings or conditions in which a
person, animal, or plant lives or operates.
OR
The natural world, as a whole or in a particular
geographical area, especially as affected by
human activity.
SOCIETY
What is a society?
People in general thought of as living together
in organized communities with shared laws,
traditions, and values
OR
The people of a particular country, area, time,
etc., thought of especially as an organized
community

Environment & Society
Throughout history humans have both affected, and been affected by, the
natural world. While a good deal has been lost due to human actions, much
of what is valued about the environment has been preserved and protected
through human actions.
Interactions between human society and the environment are constantly
changing. The environment, while highly valued by most, is used and
altered by a wide variety of people with many different interests and
values. Difficulties remain on how best to ensure the protection of our
environment and natural resources. However, a well-managed
environment can provide goods and services that are both essential for our
well being as well as for continued economic prosperity.
The environment has become one of the most important issues of our time.
The challenge is to find approaches to environmental management that
give people the quality of life they seek while protecting the environmental
systems. A multidisciplinary approach to learning can provide a deeper
understanding of the technological, political, and social options and
strategies for both studying and managing the relationship between our
society and the environment.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS
Environmental problems are defined as
problems with the planet's systems (air, water,
soil, etc.) that have developed as a result of
human interference or mistreatment of the
planet.
For example; Destruction of natural habitats,
Destruction of natural resources, Attack of
marine life, Burning of fossil fuels, Species
extinction, Soil contamination, Deforestation,
Overpopulation, Littering, Greenhouse effect etc.

SOCIAL PROBLEMS
A social problem is a condition that at least
some people in a community view as being
undesirable.
For example; Increased traffic fatalities,
Environmental problems, Air or water pollution,
Solid waste disposal/landfills, Poor sanitation,
High crime rates, Drugs etc.

SOCIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
These include :
Water use and conservation
Waste-waster and water quality
Wastes
Occupational hazard and safety
Land contamination
Land acquisition and resettlement
Labor and working conditions
Hazardous materials use
Energy use and conservation
Cultural heritage
Community health, safety and security
Biodiversity and natural resources
Air emissions and air quality

CONCLUSION
Yes, environmental problems and social problems
are related.
If we address environment problems, it requires
changing environment-society relations, and this in
turn requires effort to change relations between
different social groups men and women, urban
and rural people, landlords and laborers.
Changed social relations will give rise to different
knowledge systems and modes of managing the
environment.
