Introduction

The Growth of offshore structures in the last few decades all over the world
which led to a rapid increase in the number of offshore structures even in
unfavorable ground condition.

Battered piles have been used extensively for supporting axial and lateral loads
for a variety of structures including heavy buildings, transmission lines, power
stations, and highway structures, bridge structures, etc.

Towers and offshore structures are usually subjected to overturning moments
due to wind, wave pressure and ship impact.

CONTI.

Battered piles are used in groups of at least two or more piles to increase
capacity and loading resistance.

Battered piles are quite effective for taking lateral load as well as inclined load.
Normally batter of 1 horizontal to 12 vertical, to 5 horizontal to 12 vertical is
used.

The parameters studied by researchers include: (1) pile spacing (s), (2) number
of piles in group (N), (3) Batter angle (), (4) depth of piles (h), (5) type and
stiffness of pile material, (6) soil type.

CONTI

Stress Bulb Of Pile Foundation
In the case of driven piles there will be greater overlap of stresses due to the
displacement of soil. If piles are driven in loose sands then compaction takes place
and hence, the spacing between piles may be small.

The minimum spacing of piles is usually specified in building codes is may vary
from 2d to 6d for straight uniform cylindrical piles, d being the diameter of
the pile. For friction piles, the recommended minimum spacing is 3d.

In this case the soil may not bear stressed zone. Therefore, if the soil is
incapable of carrying the load intensity coming from vertical piles, it is
recommended to use battered piles in order to separate stress bulbs instead of
having a single bulb of high intensity.

This is useful if the soil has adequate cohesion and friction to prevent the piles
from bending.

AIM AND OBECTIVE OF STUDY
For pile groups, the load carrying capacity is a
function of batter angle and therefore
experimentally ultimate vertical load carrying
capacity for batter pile group has been found.
For that perform a laboratory model test in uniform
dense sand-bed, by perform an experiment for
different batter angle also find out optimum load by
load-displacement curve at which bearing capacity is
more than vertical pile group.
For validating results manual calculation for vertical
piles will be carried out by analytical technique.
