A deluge valve is known as a system control valve in a
deluge system, which is used for fast application of water in a spray system.
Deluge Valve is a fixed fire protection system which totally floods an area with pressurized water through a system of piping & open nozzles. The system piping is empty until the DV is actuated.
It is a quick release, hydraulically operated diaphragm actuated type of valve.
Valve Operation : It has three chambers isolated from each other by the diaphragm operated clapper and seat seal.
While in SET position, water pressure is transmitted through an external bypass check valve & restriction orifice from the system supply side to the TOP chamber.
Supply pressure in the TOP chamber act across the Diaphragm operated clapper which holds the seat against the inlet supply pressure because of the 2: 1 differential pressure design.
On detection of fire, the TOP chamber is vented to the atmosphere through the outlet port, thus the TOP chamber pressure reaches half than the supply system pressure & the upward force lifts the clapper allowing water to enter the system.
Components of Deluge Valve: Deluge valve has following components: Main Deluge valve Emergency Release box 5 way manifold Solenoid valve Positive drain actuator (PDA) Priming valve Air supply valve From compressor Upstream & Downstream stop valves. Pressure gauges Discharge line PDA Air line Manual actuator PG PG Isolation valve (Normally open) Priming line orifice Main fire header Drain Water @11kg

In Auto mode due to rupture of Quartzoid bulbs. Electrically from the control room through Solenoid valve operation. Manually from the field by opening the valve provided in the Emergency Release Box.
Auto Operation: In the event of fire due to rupture of quartzoid bulb on the detection line, the air pressure falls down. Due to this the TOP chamber pressure drops down. In that case upward force of the supply pressure lifts the clapper allowing water to enter to the system piping. Electrically from Control room: Solenoid valve is provided on the detection line. The detection line runs parallel to the water spray line throughout the area of protection. Air pressure can be released by operating the Solenoid from the concerned control room. Manual Operation: This system can be operated manually from the field by opening the valve provided in the Emergency Release Box. Applications: Deluge systems are provided to protect areas such as: Transformers through High velocity water spray system. Storage spheres & Bullets. Loading/ Unloading Gantries. Critical Process areas.
HPL has also used Deluge valves in addition of AFFF type foaming agent for the protection of whole process area of HDPE unit. Deluge system in HPL: In HPL deluge valve systems are provided as: One Deluge valve for every sphere, total 18 Nos. 3 nos. for Bullet area protection. 8 Nos. for each Gantry. 4 Nos. for NCAU unit. 6 Nos. in PP-Plant 07 Nos. in LLDPE. 04 Nos. in HDPE-Plant. Quartzoid Bulbs: These are used on the detection line. It contains Non-toxic proprietary Glycerin solution that expands when heated. At a particular temperature this bulb ruptures. The temperature rating is described by the color coding as: Color Temperature Rating (Deg. C) Orange 57 Red 68 Yellow 79 Green 93 Blue 141 Violet 182
