East Prussia) YEAR BUILT: 1333- 1380 DEDICATED TO: The Sacred Christs Body, the Maiden Maria, all saints, St. Albert HISTORY OF CONSTRUCTION: Construction began on the cathedral in 1333 to replace a smaller cathedral located in Altstadt. The cathedral was finished almost 50 years later in 1380. Work on the interior of the cathedral was completed at the end of the 14 th century. It was built by Johann Clare, bishop of Samland. IMPORTANT PEOPLE BURIED INSIDE: Ludger Von Braunshweig the Great Magister of Teutonic Orden, the son of Prince Wilhelm, Immanuel Kant (German philosopher), Julius Rupp. STAINED GLASS WINDOWS Kaliningrad Cathedral is famous for its stained glass windows which include images of: Jesus Birth, The Magis Worship, Twelve Year Old Jesus in the Temple, The Christening in the Jordan River, The Highland Sermon, Christ and the Samaritan, Saint Peter, Iairs Daughters Resurrection, Christs Entry into Town, Jesus Praying, The Crucifixion and Christs Resurrection. There are also non-religious stained glass windows with images of Duke Albrecht, Albrecht Fredric, Margrave Wilhelm and Wilhelm II. ORGAN The organ is a notable part of the cathedral. It was built by Russian- German collaborators. Special parts include a fiery red phoenix that symbolizes eternal resurrection. The big organ has 6301 trumpets, 4 fingerboards and 2pedals. The small organ has 2224 trumpets, 2 fingerboards and 1 pedal. CHAPELS The cathedral contains two chapels, a Protestant and Orthodox one. The orthodox cathedral is dedicated to the healer Pantelejmon. This chapel contains an Indestructible Wall which is also present in the Sofia Cathedral in Kiev, Ukraine. This wall is a giant icon of the patroness of Russia, the virgin Mary. This chapel also includes an icon of Pantelejmon and of Nikolay Chudotvorets. There is a wooden crucifix in the style of North-Russian woodcarving. THE BELL The bell is an important part of the cathedral. The main bell nicknamed Grandfather was not used until 1886. It has a diameter of 6 feet, 2 inches and height of 6 feet, 6 inches. The bell has an image of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus engraved on it. During World War Two the bells were sent to Hamburg for melting. After the war, it was discovered that the bells had actually been stolen and hidden until they could be returned. There are four bells in total. The second bell has been named Peter the Great , the third bell has been named Kneiphof, and the fourth bell doesnt have a name. RELIGION AND LEGENDS Until 1945 Konigsberg Cathedral was Lutheran Protestan because it was in Germany. In 1945 it became a Russian Orthodox cathedral. Yes, mass is celebrated. There are no legends What I liked most about the cathedral are the amazing stained glass windows and the fact that it is in Russia.
