What is competition ?
It arises whenever two or more parties strive for
a goal which cannot be shared.
Eg-
Competition in the Marketplace-
Can you think of two stores that sell
candy? Those two stores are
competitors. They are competing for
your money. Both stores want you to
buy their candy.
When two or more businesses sell the
same goods or service, they are
competing for the same market.

THREAT OF SUBSTITUTE PRODUCTS

IDENTIFYING COMPETITERS
All businesses face competition. Even if you're the only
restaurant in town you must compete with cinemas,
bars and other businesses where your customers could
spend their money instead of with you.
You can get clues to the existence of competitors from:
Local business directories
Advertising
Press reports
Exhibitions and trade fairs
Searching on the internet for similar products or services .
Questionnaires
Information provided by customers.
Searching for existing patented products that are similar
to yours.
Planning applications and building work in progress.

Questions For Discussion:

In 2001, Hindustan Times decided to invest Rs. 4
billion to counter competition from the Times Of
India. Do you Think the companys strategy would help
it to face competition from TOI?
Analyst felt that Hindustan Times was spending all the
money in the North. While some analysts felt that HT
should enter Mumbai, others felt that it was too late.
Do you think HT should enter Mumbai, or concentrate
in northern India where it was an undisputed leader?
